MPs say cable car construction should not be done against local sentiments

Kathmandu, 9 February: In today’s meeting of the National Assembly, lawmakers have expressed the view that problems have arisen due to the construction of a cable car in the Pathibhara area, contrary to the sentiments of the local people. During the special session of the meeting, they emphasized that infrastructure should not be built at the expense of the traditional features, natural and cultural importance of the religious site.

In the meeting, Nepal Communist Party (Unified Socialist) MP Jayanti Devi Rai stressed the need to resolve the problem as soon as possible as the construction of the cable car in Pathibhara against the wishes of the local people has created problems. She mentioned that the construction of the cable car against the wishes of the local people has turned the religious site there into a protest site.

MP Rai urged the government to understand the wishes of the locals and resolve the problem through consensus, expressing the view that infrastructure should not be built at the expense of the tradition, natural and cultural importance of religious sites. He drew the government’s attention to the state’s responsibility to provide roads, drinking water, education, toilets, rest areas, and marketing of local produce as per the demands of the community rather than concrete structures at religious sites.

Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Center) MP Renu Chand drew the government’s attention to the issue of the construction of a cable car in the Pathibhara area, a religious and cultural hub of indigenous peoples. She criticized the administration’s repression of the protesting locals and demanded free treatment and compensation for those injured in the protest.

MP Chand alleged that the citizens protesting in the name of security are being oppressed and urged to stop the work immediately. He also expressed the view that the issue of constructing a cable car in Pathibhara is not suitable from a spiritual, economic, environmental and developmental perspective. He said that this violates the fundamental rights of the locals and increases the risk of destroying their identity, social and traditional values and norms.

In today’s meeting, Nepali Congress MP Jitjung Basnet said that the confidentiality provisions in Section 3 of the Oath Act 2079 BS were not being followed. He said that it was found that some confidential details and information from the time of holding office were being written and spoken after leaving office, indicating that the law was not being followed.

Stating that many countries around the world have provisions to punish those who leak confidential information, MP Basnet drew the government’s attention through the House to the practice of writing exaggerated autobiographies in Nepal upon being relieved of their duties. He demanded that the oath-related laws be effectively implemented in Nepal as well.

Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Center) MP Maya Prasad Sharma said that even after a long time since the Jajarkot earthquake, the safe rehabilitation and relief work has not been completed, drawing the government’s attention to the problems of those affected by the earthquake due to the delay. He pointed out the need for adequate discussions while formulating delegated legislation acts, rules and laws.

Bhuwan Bahadur Sunar, a member of parliament from the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center), stressed that the police administration should not cause any trouble to the youth of the Dalit community while they are getting married. He drew the government’s attention to the issue of trouble and stress faced by the administration due to the inter-caste marriage of Satendra Ram and Neha Rauniyar of Sarlahi.

Nepali Congress MP Durga Kumari Gurung drew the government’s attention to the problems of the people of Karnali Province, including the fact that despite being rich in natural and historical heritage, language and culture, they are deprived of basic medical treatment, are victims of malnutrition, and are deprived of access to drinking water and electricity. She urged the government to resolve the problems of the people of Karnali through the necessary budget and programs.

Tulsa Kumari Dahal, Chairperson of the Legislative Management Committee under the National Assembly, said that the current government has brought the ordinance by exercising the authority granted by the constitution, as was the practice of all governments in the past to work by bringing ordinances. She said that bringing the ordinance is an important issue for the current government to work quickly and that the opposition should provide positive support as ordinances are necessary to implement the constitution and make certain laws.

Chairman Dahal emphasized that the current government, formed by two major parties to develop the country and work for the people, should cooperate and coordinate to work positively and result-oriented rather than making comments about the government. Stating that the current government has amended the Act on Transitional Justice, he drew the government’s attention to the issue of appointing officials to the two commissions.
