After the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran on Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump appealed to the Iranian people to “take back their government.”
Reports indicate that the first clear strike occurred near the office of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the capital, Tehran. Smoke was later seen rising from various parts of the city. In a video message posted on social media, President Trump said the United States had launched a “major combat operation” in Iran.
He claimed that Iran was expanding its nuclear program and planning to develop missiles capable of reaching the United States. Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether the 86-year-old Khamenei was present in his office at the time of the attack. He had not appeared publicly in recent days amid escalating tensions with the United States.
The attack came as Washington was increasing pressure on Iran over a nuclear agreement and deploying fighter jets and warships to the region. An Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the campaign targeted Iranian military forces, government symbols, and intelligence infrastructure.
Roads leading to Khamenei’s compound in Tehran have been closed, and witnesses reported hearing additional explosions across the capital. Iranian state television confirmed the blasts but did not provide detailed information. Iran has closed its airspace and disrupted mobile services.
Neighboring Iraq also closed its airspace, according to its transport ministry. Sirens were sounded across Israel, and residents were warned to remain alert for possible missile attacks. Israeli hospitals have activated emergency protocols and are preparing to move patients and surgeries to underground facilities.
Israel also announced the closure of its airspace. Iran has not clearly stated whether it will immediately retaliate but warned that U.S. military bases and personnel across the region could become targets of a potential response. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the operation was aimed at “removing threats,” though further details have not been disclosed. So far, there has been no official information about casualties. Analysts say the developments have increased the risk of broader military confrontation in the Middle East.
