India objects to EU sanctions: “Unilateral decisions are unacceptable”

India has issued its first official response after the European Union (EU) imposed sanctions on a Russian-owned refinery located in India. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed its objection to the sanctions, stating that it does not accept unilateral measures.

In a statement released on social media platform X, Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have taken note of the recent sanctions imposed by the European Union. India does not support any unilateral sanctions.”

He further added, “India is a responsible nation and is fully committed to its obligations under international law. The Government of India considers energy security vital in meeting the basic needs of its citizens.”

On Friday, European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas wrote on X, “For the first time, we are imposing sanctions on Rosneft’s largest refinery located in India, including its flag registry.”

This marks the 18th round of sanctions imposed by the EU against Russia in the context of the war in Ukraine. This phase also targets 105 Russian ‘shadow fleet’ vessels and several major banks.

In a separate post, Kallas stated, “This is the toughest sanction against Russia so far. Our efforts to restrict Kremlin’s war funding will continue.”

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte issued a warning to countries like Brazil, China, and India, stating, “If they continue trading with Russia, they may face a second wave of sanctions.”

Conclusion: India’s firm response to the EU’s sanctions on a Russian-owned refinery within its territory highlights its longstanding stance against unilateral measures. Emphasizing its commitment to international law and prioritization of energy security, India has made it clear that it will not compromise on its sovereign interests. As the EU intensifies pressure on Russia through expanded sanctions, growing tensions with non-aligned countries like India may further complicate the global diplomatic landscape surrounding the Ukraine conflict.
