Kathmandu, 10 Nov: Nepal’s representatives, fully prepared with the agenda for the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP-30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, have reached Brazil. The formal inauguration of the conference is on Kattik 24, i.e., Monday, in the city of Belém, Brazil.
According to Shiva Kumar Wagle, spokesperson for the Ministry of Forests and Environment, this time, Nepal is participating in COP-30 under the leadership of Dr. Madan Prasad Pariyar, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development. Under the COP, the high-level meeting has been ongoing since Thursday. Experts advocating for climate change are engaged in debates to finalize the agenda. On behalf of Nepal, Dr. Rajesh Mishra, Secretary of Forests and Environment, had discussed Nepal’s expectations.
Dr. Manjit Dhakal, acting as Nepal’s key facilitator for the Least Developed Countries, is continuously advocating. According to the Ministry of Forests and Environment, two issues are particularly important for Nepal this time. Firstly, Joint Secretary Dr. Dhakal informed that the topic of how to set adaptation measures for climate change is significant.
Similarly, the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund, along with the areas that can benefit from it and the process for submitting proposals, is another important topic. Dhakal stated that the voice raised by Nepal and other Least Developed Countries to increase the fund, which has shrunk as developed countries have not been able to deposit the full amount, is also crucial. So far, only 2 billion 50 crore dollars have been accumulated in the fund. Furthermore, this time, it will be distributed to countries like Nepal, which have suffered losses, in the form of small projects, based on the evaluation of project proposals. The ministry has clarified that Nepal will present its perspectives in the capacity of Chair in the meeting of the Least Developed Countries under the conference.
