Greenland’s Prime Minister on Monday called US President Donald Trump’s comments “wacky” in response to his recent comments that he wants to take over Greenland.
“The world order is currently divided and shaky on many fronts,” Prime Minister Mute Åsed told Danish public radio on the eve of the Danish provincial legislative elections on Monday. “President Trump of the United States is making the world community feel nervous and insecure by making many unexpected statements.”
Addressing the US Congress last week, Trump reiterated his plan to seize Greenland, arguing that the US needs the vast Arctic island for national and international security reasons. The region’s election campaign has been dominated by the issue of setting a deadline for Greenland’s independence from Denmark.
Trump said, “We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you to the United States.” President Trump said he is confident that the United States will get Greenland in some form. The plan, which has become a laughing stock for even some Republicans in the US Congress, was seen as a mockery by many Greenlanders.
“We deserve to be treated with respect, but I don’t think the US president has been doing that lately since he took office,” EZ said. He said, “The recent statements made by the US President mean that we do not want to be as close to the US as we were in the past.”
The day after Trump addressed Congress, EZ wrote on Facebook, “Greenland people do not want to be American or Danish. We are Greenlanders. Americans and their leaders need to understand this.”
