In a calculated response to recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, Ukraine’s defense forces launched a series of overnight drone strikes on August 2, targeting multiple strategic locations deep within Russia, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Ukraine’s military confirmed that a wave of drone attacks launched overnight ignited multiple explosions and fires at critical infrastructure sites inside Russia. The coordinated strike involved Ukraine’s Armed Forces, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), and the newly established Drone Systems Forces.
Among the key targets was the Shahed drone depot and launch site at the Primorsko-Akhtarsk airfield in Russia’s Krasnodar region. The SBU verified the hit, noting that a blaze erupted near the drone launch pads shortly after impact.
Another precision strike targeted the Electropribor facility in Penza, a plant responsible for manufacturing sophisticated military communications gear, electronics for aircraft, armored systems, naval vessels, and space equipment. Smoke was seen rising from the area following the drone incursion.
These strikes mark an intensification of Ukraine’s efforts to disrupt Russia’s war machine in retaliation for recent assaults on Ukrainian cities.
Russian authorities confirmed limited damage and casualties following a massive overnight Ukrainian drone assault targeting key infrastructure across several regions.
In Penza Oblast, Governor Oleg Melnichenko reported that one person was killed and another injured as a result of the attacks. Meanwhile, Rostov Oblast Governor Yuriy Slyusar also acknowledged a drone strike in his territory, though he provided no details on casualties or damage.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that its air defense systems intercepted 112 Ukrainian drones across a wide area, including Ryazan, Samara, Penza, Voronezh, Belgorod, and Lipetsk oblasts, as well as Krasnodar Krai and Russian-occupied Crimea. However, consistent with past practice, the ministry did not specify how many drones successfully evaded defenses and hit their intended targets.
Earlier on August 2, explosions were reported near the Dyagilevo airbase in Ryazan and close to Feodosia in Crimea. Social media users posted videos showing a large blaze near a suspected fuel depot in the occupied peninsula, adding to growing speculation about the extent of the damage.
The drone campaign is widely seen as Ukraine’s response to a series of intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian urban centers in recent weeks.
The strikes reportedly hit several high-value sites, including:
-
An oil refinery in Ryazan Oblast
-
The Novokuybyshevsk oil facility in Samara Oblast
-
The Anna-Neft oil storage complex in Voronezh Oblast
-
The Electropribor plant in Penza Oblast, a critical facility producing secure communications equipment, encryption tools, and electronic components for Russia’s military systems
Ukrainian officials framed the operation as a direct response to escalating Russian aggression against civilian targets.
