UAE Cracks Down on AI-Generated Disinformation, Arrests 10 Including a Nepali Citizen

In a significant move to safeguard national security and public order amidst the escalating conflict in the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates has arrested 10 individuals for allegedly misusing artificial intelligence to create and spread sophisticated disinformation online. Among those detained, according to a report by Gulf News, is one Nepali national, though their identity and the nationalities of the other nine have not been officially disclosed.

The arrests were ordered by the UAE’s Attorney General, Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, following an intensive monitoring operation by state security on digital platforms. Authorities discovered that the group was exploiting the heightened regional tensions stemming from the ongoing war to produce and disseminate highly misleading content. The primary objective of this campaign, officials stated, was to confuse the public and undermine the nation’s stability and security.

The nature of the disinformation was particularly insidious, leveraging advanced technology to blur the line between fact and fiction. Investigators found that the group had circulated a mix of content, including repurposed real footage—such as videos of air defense systems in action from other conflict zones—and entirely fabricated clips generated through the misuse of artificial intelligence. These AI-manipulated videos depicted alarming and entirely fictitious scenarios, including massive explosions rocking various locations across the UAE, coordinated attacks on prominent national landmarks, and scenes of catastrophic fires. The intent was clearly to create a sense of panic and insecurity among residents and to project an image of instability within the country.

Following a thorough investigation, the accused have been presented to the judiciary for expedited prosecution, underscoring the seriousness with which UAE authorities view such offenses. This incident highlights a growing global challenge: the use of AI to manufacture convincing “deepfakes” and weaponize information during times of conflict. For the UAE, a nation that prides itself on its security and stability in a volatile region, this crackdown sends a strong message that it will not tolerate any attempts to use digital tools to compromise public safety or national unity. The case also serves as a stark reminder for expatriate communities, including the large Nepali workforce in the Emirates, about the legal consequences of engaging in or sharing content that could threaten the host country’s security.
