The National Human Rights Commission Urges Prime Minister Oli to Refrain from Inflammatory Remarks

Kathmandu, 26 May: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Nepal has urged Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to refrain from making inflammatory statements. In a public statement, the Commission expressed concern over the Prime Minister’s recent remarks, stating:

“Nepal’s Constitution and laws do not prohibit expressing opinions peacefully. In this context, it is worrying that the honorable Prime Minister has made remarks targeting others’ thoughts, expressions, and demonstrations.”

The Commission emphasized that while every individual, group, or party has the right to freedom of expression, any provocative statement that could incite conflict is contrary to the values and principles of human rights.

The NHRC issued the statement on Monday, highlighting its serious attention to remarks made by Prime Minister Oli, including his directive that “Kathmandu must be under the control of the CPN-UML from 11 AM to 2 PM on Jestha 15 [May 28]” and his call for UML cadres to be prepared. The Commission deemed these statements as directive in nature and deeply concerning.

The statement also noted that ensuring peace, security, and public order in the country is the responsibility of the government’s security agencies. It added that any attempt by a political party to seize control of any area in a democratic country is a violation of the rule of law and encourages unlawful behavior.

The Commission further stated:

“We urge responsible individuals to be restrained in their speech, refrain from making negative comments targeting individuals, groups, or political parties, and call on security agencies to strengthen peace and security in the capital and other areas. We also urge all parties to ensure that their protests and demonstrations remain peaceful.”

The NHRC also acknowledged that it has received a formal notification requesting it to monitor the planned people’s movement in Kathmandu on Jestha 15, organized by the pro-monarchy United People’s Movement Committee.
