Make a living by selling corn

Dharan (Sunsari) 20 October: Itahari sub-metropolitan city-6 Kafulmati Rajvanshi used to spend their daily lives burning corn. She said that instead of doing other people’s work all day long, selling corn by burning makes a good income. Rajvanshi says that she used to buy and sell maize fields from various places in Morang and Jhapa. Throughout the day, Rajvanshi seems to be busy selling maize in a roadside stall near the Radha Krishna temple in Itahari. She has been selling burnt small maize 1 for Rs 20 and large maize 1 for Rs 40.

She said, “I have been burning and selling corn for the past 20 years. I don’t have the skills to do anything else to eat. I can’t even read that much. I don’t have land to do my own farming. That’s how I bought and sold corn from other people’s fields.” Rajvanshi said that she used to earn from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per day by selling corn. “In a month, she earns Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 40,000”, she said. Parvati Chaudhary of Itahari-2 has been selling corn by roasting it for three years. She said, “During the off-season, it is a little difficult to purchase raw corn. If you can make a contract right away, you will get a lot of profit. But I don’t make contracts, I buy and sell on the basis of the per maize.”

Chowdhury said that maize is bought at Rs 10 to Rs 15 and sold at Rs 20 to Rs 35. In her spare time, she said that he used to go to the forest in the morning to collect firewood and sell it. She said, “I go to look for firewood in the morning, I bring firewood from the forest and sell it. I search for firewood all morning, I burn corn and sell it from noon to evening. I earn between Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000 a month, and from this I have been able to cover household expenses.

Sangeeta Mandal of Itahari-6 also said that she also started selling maize after seeing that her sister was selling it. She is earning a good income by roasting corn in the street near the main market of Itahari. Mandal said, “this is better and easier than doing other business.” She said that she earns up to Rs 20,000 per month by selling burnt corn. There are many people who make a living by roasting corn in various places and streets of Itahari market. There are more women than men who burn and sell corn. Their home business is run by the income from selling corn.
