Bangladeshi actress Nusrat Faria, who portrayed Sheikh Hasina in the biographical film “Mujib: The Making of a Nation,” was arrested on Sunday at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. She was reportedly taken into custody in connection with an attempted murder case related to last year’s student protests.
According to the Dhaka Tribune, Nusrat was stopped during immigration checks while en route to Thailand. Authorities alerted the police, who then arrested her. She was first taken to Vatara Police Station and later transferred to the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. A prior arrest warrant had already been issued against her.
The case dates back to protests in July 2024, when mass demonstrations erupted across Bangladesh against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. During a protest in the Vatara area, a student was allegedly attacked, leading to an attempted murder case filed against Nusrat and 16 others.
These protests were part of a widespread anti-government movement that eventually forced Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee the country. After her departure, protesters reportedly stormed and looted her residence.
Nusrat Faria had gained major attention for her role as Sheikh Hasina in “Mujib: The Making of a Nation,” a biographical film directed by Shyam Benegal and co-produced by India and Bangladesh, released in 2023. She has also acted in several Bangladeshi and Indian Bengali films including “Aashiqui,” “Hero 420,” “Badsha – The Don,” “Premi O Premi,” “Boss 2: Back to Rule,” and “Operation Sundarban.” She currently has six films scheduled for release in the coming years.
Her arrest has sparked fresh debate about her acting career and the broader political climate in Bangladesh.
Amid intense anti-government protests in July 2024, Bangladesh’s then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign and flee the country. The demonstrations, marked by widespread unrest and violence, escalated to the point where protesters stormed and looted her residence following her departure. Her exile marked a dramatic turning point in the nation’s political landscape.
