Foreign Travel Ban on Former Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Three Others

Kathmandy, 28 Sep: A decision has been made to restrict foreign travel for former Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli, former Home Minister and Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak, along with three others.

According to Bijyan Raj Sharma, a member of the Commission of Inquiry (2082) formed to investigate the incidents of Bhadra 23 and 24, the commission’s meeting on Sunday decided to impose a travel ban on former Home Secretary Gokarnamani Duwadi, former Chief of National Investigation Department Hutaraj Thapa, and former Chief District Officer of Kathmandu Chhabilal Rijal.

Sharma informed that since these individuals are under investigation in connection with the incidents of Bhadra 23 and 25, the decision was made to restrict their foreign travel. He added that the concerned agencies will be instructed not to allow them to leave the Kathmandu Valley without the commission’s approval, as they may be required to appear before the commission at any time for necessary proceedings.

Furthermore, to carry out the commission’s responsibilities effectively—including submitting a report on the incidents of Bhadra 23 and 24—it was decided to request additional expert manpower from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

UML’s Objection to Oli’s Passport Suspension

CPN-UML has objected to the suspension of party chair KP Sharma Oli’s passport. To discuss the unfolding political developments, the party has called a central committee meeting on Ashoj 27 and 28.

According to Deputy General Secretary and spokesperson Pradeep Gyawali, the party secretariat’s meeting held in Gundu on Sunday made this decision. The secretariat meeting scheduled for Ashoj 19 and 20 will finalize the agenda for the central committee meeting.

Gyawali stated, “We may soon be holding the national general convention. The central committee can take a decision on this matter.”

Tribute, Demands, and Concerns

Gyawali added that the UML has expressed condolences for those who lost their lives during the Gen-Z protests and has wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. The meeting also demanded that those responsible for violence, vandalism, and arson be brought under legal action.

Regarding the commission’s decision to suspend Oli’s passport, Gyawali said the party is deeply concerned. He remarked, “It seems the government is not only trying to sideline political parties but also to suppress them, avoiding contact and dialogue with them. We are serious and worried about all these developments.”
