Kathmandu, 23 May: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has suggested that royalists should build a throne for former King Gyanendra Shah at his own home.
Stating that the country has transitioned to a democratic republic, Prime Minister Oli said there is no place for a royal throne under the new democratic system.
“They say they’ll place the king on the throne on Jestha 15 (May 28). Well, build a throne at home,” he said. “The national throne is gone. Imagining a royal throne in today’s time—what kind of mind do they have?”
He emphasized that the monarchy was overthrown by the Nepali people and that the country is now governed under a new democratic constitution.
“The Nepali people have already overthrown the monarchy. It’s long gone. We have a new constitution, a parliament, a president, a judiciary, and a democratic system—this is our reality,” he said.
Oli criticized the monarchy for its past abuses, claiming it killed people arbitrarily. He said the monarchy had been caged and thrown out.
“The monarchy, which roamed like a wild beast, killing whoever it pleased, has been caught, caged, and then thrown away,” he said.
Addressing the royalist call for a decisive movement starting on Jestha 15, Oli mocked the recurring nature of such proclamations. “They say they’ll bring back the monarchy on the 15th. What dreams they see! After Jestha 15, they’ll name another 15th. Earlier they said Baisakh 11 (April 23). On that day, youths celebrated a day of joy,” he said.
Referring to the same date, Oli noted that Youth Force Nepal celebrated the day as one of democratic victory, the day the former king conceded.
“Baisakh 11 was the day the king bowed down. The day the people’s forcibly seized rights were restored, young people celebrated it as a festival,” he said, referring to former King Gyanendra’s reinstatement of parliament after a popular movement.
Oli urged people not to be misled by the monarchists’ attempts to stage a revival of the monarchy.
He also criticized Jagman Gurung, former Vice Chancellor of the Nepal Academy, whom he himself had appointed, for allegedly reading Gyanendra’s astrological chart.
“I used to respectfully call him Guruji. I appointed him as Vice Chancellor of the Academy. Now I hear he read Gyanendra’s horoscope and declared he’d be king again. I’ll send him my horoscope—let him read that too,” Oli said.
Speaking at the 10th National Convention of the Youth Association Nepal in Pokhara, Oli stressed that one person’s horoscope wasn’t enough; the people’s collective will mattered.
“There are many people here. Read the people’s horoscope. No monarchy or regression is returning to this country,” he declared.
Oli said Nepal had lived under monarchy for 250 years and recalled the palace massacre that eventually led to Gyanendra becoming king by fate. He accused Gyanendra of misrule during his three-year direct rule.
“After the palace massacre, the former king Gyanendra, who came to the throne by fate, ruled for three years, behaving as if something had gotten into his ear—restless and destructive,” he said. “Not everyone has experienced what it feels like to have something stuck in their ear—but it’s not something anyone should have to go through.”
Responding to Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chair Rajendra Lingden’s remark that he would provide a helicopter for Oli to flee, the Prime Minister dismissed it as delusional.
“Recently, one young guy said he’d provide a helicopter for me to escape. What kind of dreams are they dreaming?” he said. “I don’t remember exactly who said it—some hot-headed person.”
He urged Youth Association Nepal to lead efforts to stop regression and protect the nation.
“To stop this regression, to defend the country, to protect our rights and our land, the youth must take the lead,” he said.
Oli claimed the current government is working with zero tolerance toward corruption and said some people are fearful because it might expose them.
“This government is advancing with zero tolerance for corruption, without favoritism. We are not just making noise—we are working. Those who fear exposure are already panicking,” he said.
