Everyone must unite to face the challenges of climate change: Prime Minister

Kathmandu, December 26: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that all national and international organizations and individuals should unite to face the challenges of climate change.

Addressing the review program of the 29th World Climate Conference organized by the Ministry of Forest and Environment here today, Prime Minister Oli emphasized the need to work together to keep nature clean and for its sustainable conservation. Stating that the government will take the lead in addressing the challenges of climate change and arrange climate finance, he said that the Ministry of Forests and other agencies should also spread awareness to prevent forest fires as it will adversely affect the agricultural sector as the land dries up. He said that every community should be aware to prevent man-made environmental pollution.

“We have not contributed to global warming, but we have been forced to bear its consequences. We have been punished for our unforgivable actions. It is not just Nepal that is affected, it is a global issue,” Prime Minister Oli said. “The issue of Himalayan climate is not just about the Himalayas, the world’s temperature system is linked to the Himalayas. The Himalayas have the ability to cool the air. Losing this ability is a climate challenge. Therefore, we must move towards the concept of protection from the Himalayas to the sea.”

Recalling that he had strongly stated at the 79th United Nations General Assembly that Nepal should be given climate compensation, Prime Minister Oli mentioned that Nepal has protected 24 percent of its land area to protect the environment of this planet. He urged to start preparations for COP-30 right now, including a review of COP-29.

The 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was held in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 26 to December 7. The conference reviewed Nepal’s participation in the conference and the steps that Nepal should take in the field of climate change in the coming days. A Nepali delegation led by President Ram Chandra Poudel participated in the conference.

The program was attended by Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devendra Dahal, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, Minister for Forests and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, federal parliamentarians, UN Resident Representative, policymakers, local level people’s representatives, and others.

 Forest and Environment Minister Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri said the ministry is focusing on implementing the achievements achieved by the country’s lobbying in the field of climate change.

Speaking at a review program of the 29th World Climate Conference organized by the ministry here today, he said initiatives have been taken for legislation and institutional reforms necessary to implement the achievements. Minister Shahi said it was not possible for any one country or community to fight the climate crisis.

“In such circumstances, I am confident that the Nepali delegation at COP-29 has succeeded in drawing the world’s attention to the serious impacts of climate change and the benefits that Nepal can take,” he said. ” During the conference, he said that the National Nature Conservation Fund was listed as the implementing organization of the UN Adaptation Fund for the process of bringing necessary assistance for climate adaptation in Nepal.

Shahi said the ministry is in the process of formulating a new NDC with targets till 2035 to be delivered in He informed that preparations are underway for the Everest Dialogue on Climate Change with national and international participation.
