There is less crowding at the office since biometrics are not required

Kathmandu, 17 Nov: The deadline for collecting and updating voter lists for the upcoming House of Representatives member election scheduled for Falgun 21 (5 March 2026) has been extended by five days. Accordingly, the process of registering new names on the voter list is ongoing across the country today. In Kathmandu, the number is 29 thousand.

According to Thakur Prasad Bhattarai, Chief of the District Election Office, Kathmandu, the number of new registrations on the voter list until Sunday is more than 29 thousand. He said that as online registration via the national identity card does not require visiting the District Election Office for biometrics, the number of people physically present at the office for registration is decreasing.

Responding to the query about how to register online via the national identity card, Bhattarai said, “Visit the Election Commission’s website, there you will find ‘Voter List Pre-registration and Update’. Then, go to ‘New Registration’. After going there, there are two options: with a national identity card and without a national identity card. Those with a national identity card should fill in all the details, after which a ‘registration successful’ message will appear.”

He further mentioned that the Commission will then send a code number, followed by authentication. After the Election Commission office authenticates, arrangements have been made to provide another code via message or email.

He informed that arrangements have been made for messages for citizens residing within the country and email for those abroad.

Lalitpur: 16,310

According to Goma Dharmala Ghimire, Chief of the District Election Office, Lalitpur, the number of registrations on the voter list until Sunday evening is 16,310.

She mentions that since filling out the online form via the national identity card does not require coming to the Election Office for biometrics, the crowd at the office is gradually decreasing.

Bhaktapur: 13,280

According to Prakash Magar, Chief of the District Election Office, Bhaktapur, 13,280 people had registered their names on the voter list until Sunday evening. He informed that in Bhaktapur, a minimum of six hundred to a maximum of twelve hundred voters physically appear daily for voter list registration.

He informed that even though physical presence is not required at the Election Office for biometrics after filling the online form via the national identity card, people still come with various queries.

He said, “Citizens with a national identity card do not need to come to the Election Office for biometrics to register their names on the voter list; they can go through the Election Commission’s new registration process and fill in the details. However, even after filling out the form there, they come to inquire whether the confirmation has been done or not, due to confusion.”

According to the chiefs of the election offices in the valley, encouraging participation of youth has been seen in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur. They also stated that citizens with permanent residence outside the valley have also registered their names on the voter list from the District Election Offices available in the valley.
