The profession of Madal in crisis

Ghodaghodi-9, Kailali 26 Bhadra (11 Sep): The gateway to the far west of  Kailali is about six kilometers west of Chisapani bridge, Balchaur. In Lamkichuha municipality-3, Balchaur, there is Tirtha instruments shop, that has been operating for a long time. Madal, Tabala, Damu and Dholaki are made here. Lately, Tirtha Badi is sad after making different types of instruments but they are not being sold.

Even Madal, which used to be the most sold among the tools, has stopped being sold now. Tirtha Badi says that the business is in crisis. “Earlier, it was not possible enough to sell Madal during festivals, but now, there is no sale at all. Locals of Magar village, Tharu community used to buy most of the Madal, now they don’t come to shop, even if you bring to village to sell it,no one buys and nobody comes to ask.

Tirtha complains that in the past, he has been doing education and upbringing of his children through this profession, but now he is also struggling to make ends meet through business. This time too, I made 25 Madals. He thought that he would be sold after Teej, but Teej is over, not a single Madal has been sold, he said”.
