Teachers’ Protest Enters 15th Day

Kathmandu, 16 April: The teachers’ protest has entered its 15th day in Kathmandu. Education is our right, and we cannot tolerate injustice against teachers!

Today, I joined thousands of fellow teachers from across the country on the streets of Kathmandu.

This movement, carried out for the rights, dignity, and respect of teachers, is dedicated to improving the quality of education and ensuring a bright future for the next generation.

We stand for a fair, responsible, and inclusive education system.

Let us ensure the right to an independent teachers’ organization without political interference.

I will continue to participate in this protest in the coming days.” “This is the voice of a teacher participating in the protest.”

Since April 2, 2025, thousands of teachers from across Nepal have been protesting in Kathmandu, demanding the immediate enactment of the long-pending School Education Act. The protest, organized by the Nepal Teachers’ Federation, has seen educators marching through the capital, holding sit-ins, and suspending academic duties, including the evaluation of examination papers.

What are the demands

They have specially three major points of demands- Enactment of the School Education Act: Teachers are urging the government to pass the bill that has been under discussion for over a year and a half.Job Security and Fair Wages: They seek permanent status for non-permanent teachers and equitable salaries comparable to civil servants and Centralized Management: Educators prefer to remain under federal jurisdiction rather than being managed by local governments, fearing political interference at the local level.

The government has initiated discussions to address the teachers’ concerns and has called for a special parliamentary session on April 25 to facilitate the passage of the School Education Bill . However, the teachers have expressed skepticism, emphasizing the need for concrete actions rather than promises.

Teachers have stated that the protest will not stop until the School Education Act is passed.

The Teachers’ Federation has announced a general strike in all educational institutions and joined the movement.

As a result of this protest, the publication of the SEE exam results is expected to be delayed, and the Grade 12 examinations are also likely to be affected.
