Lhosar has been considered as the main festival of the Tamu people since ancient times, which has been continuing the biological, social, cultural and traditional traditions of the Tamu people. Previously, the Lhosar festival of the Tamu people was based on the sun since the primitive communistic matrilineal era, and it is said that the guru of the Tamu people determined in ancient times that the time changes every six months on Pus 15 and Asar 15, as the earth revolves around the sun and when the sun approaches the north pole of the earth and when it approaches the south pole. It is also customary to bid farewell to the past Lho on Pus 14 and welcome the arrival of the new Lho on Pus 15 and exchange good wishes by applying white tika on the forehead.
According to the leaders of the community, the Tamu people have determined their Lhosar festival based on the 15th of Poush according to natural and traditional customs. In the Tamu language, Barga means year. In the common language of the Tamu people, Lho means Barga and Sar means new, and it is said that every 15th of Poush is celebrated as a new Lhosar. The Tamu people have a tradition that one Lho is completed in a year. Every 12-12 years, a Lho comes and it takes one Barga to change that Lho. That is called Lhokor in the Tamu language.
On the occasion of Tamu Lhosar celebrated by the Gurung community, children’s dance competitions, sports competitions and other programs are going to be held in Ilam.
