Red Panda and Thar festival during Mundhum Trail tour year

Khotang, 16th November: Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality is going to organize Red Panda and Thar Festival on the occasion of ‘Mundum Trail Tour Year – 2025’. The festival is planned to be organized with the aim of protecting, promoting and promoting the endangered animals Red Panda and Thar, which are found in various forests within the municipal area through the tourists who visit the Mundum Trail during the year.

Mayor Tirtharaj Bhattarai said that a task force including the Ward President of the ward connected to the Mundum Trail and the Community Forest Federation will make a detailed study and plan and based on that, the time of the festival will be determined. “Local levels have an important role to make the Mundhum Trail Tour 2025 effective and successful. We have decided to organize the Red Panda and Thar Festival targeting the tourists who come to visit during the visit year”, he said. To make the festival a success, a preparatory committee has been formed under the coordination of ward president Mugadhan Rai of Ward No. 10 Patheka. The preparatory committee comprising the ward presidents of all the fifteen wards will make a plan for the festival after a detailed study.

On the occasion of ‘Mundum Trail Tour Year’ which will officially start from the 1st of January, honey hunting festival and shed stay (Gothbas) festival in Kepilasgadhi Rural Municipality and Ubhouli Sakela and other cultural festivals are planned to be held in Sakela Rural Municipality. Similarly, there are plans to hold Gurans, horse riding and film shooting festivals in Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality of Bhojpur, Ultra Marathon, Mountain Cycling in Bhojpur Municipality, Nachong (Dhami) Festival in Salpa Silicho Rural Municipality, Rudraksha Festival in Shadanand Municipality, Chakchakur Festival in Mahakulung Rural Municipality.

 

The locals are building homestays and guest houses for the domestic and foreign tourists who come to visit Mundhum Trail for the first time. Mundhum Trail is targeted to attract around one lakh tourists during the year. To make the visit successful, various local levels connected with ‘Mundhum Trail’ have been requested to organize various festivals and tourist activities in their respective areas, said Ramesh Rai, chairman of the organizer Mayung-Temke-Salpa-Silichung Tourism Promotion Center.

“As Mundhum Trail is a virgin destination for tourists, the target is to bring in at least one lakh tourists”, he said. The ‘Mundhum Trail’, which is in the list of 100 tourist destinations announced by the government, is about 170 kilometers long. All three levels of government are investing crores of rupees in upgrading the ‘Mundhum Trail’, which is a natural tourist spot.

The ‘Mundhum Trail’ officially announced on 5th January 2019 has been completed with basic physical infrastructure including widening the footpath, laying dry stone stairs and stone soles. On the ‘Mundhum Trail’, which started from Tawabhanjayang in Sakela Rural Municipality-3 Khidima, 30 percent of the local level, 35 percent of the provincial government and 35 percent of the Swedish government have been upgraded to 252 at a cost of Rs 91 lakh 45 thousand.

The ‘Mundhum Trail’ is preferred by tourists who are nature lovers, i.e. who want to enjoy the beauty and come to study and research Kirati culture and traditions. The Mundhum Trail, which is located on the border of Khotang, Bhojpur, Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha in the eastern hill district, is related to the history of the Kirat community. On the border of Khotang and Bhojpur, this trail ends by reaching 3,165 meters Temkedanda, Mayung, 3,750 meters Salpapokhri and 4,165 meters Silichung. Construction of Mundhum Trail, which has been started on the top of the mountain, takes about 13 days for foreigners and 10 days for Nepali to complete.

Chairman of Tourism Promotion Center Rai said that for domestic and foreign tourists who want to enjoy the beauty of the mountains, they will not feel tired while traveling. The trail is named ‘Mundhum Trail’ because there are settlements of most of the Kirat community and the Kirati lifestyle, customs and culture mentioned in their oral book ‘Munmum’ will be described. Large grasslands, wide range of sheep and goats, as well as horse riding, have been attracting more domestic and foreign tourists. Another attraction of this area is that you can enjoy watching dozens of species of Gurans, Champ, Katus, Lokta, various herbs and dense forest. You can also play hide and seek with different species of birds, red pandas, bees and various wild animals found in the duck pond area of ​​Mayung. With the increase in the number of tourists on the uninhabited ‘Mundhum Trail’ footpath, the local herdsmen arrange food and accommodation for them.
