Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is officially visiting China from December 2 to 5, 2024, with a focus on strengthening bilateral ties and advancing key initiatives. The visit comes after an invitation from Beijing, marking an important engagement for Nepal amidst its ongoing efforts to balance relations with neighboring powers.
The agenda for the visit includes discussions on converting the Chinese loan for Pokhara International Airport into a grant, expediting implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects, and potentially signing a new “Framework for Cooperation” under the BRI. This framework emphasizes grants over loans to fund infrastructure and connectivity projects, reflecting Nepal’s cautious stance on debt management. Additionally, the visit will address delays in executing past agreements and explore new projects under the BRI.
This visit highlights Nepal’s intention to enhance its economic and political ties with China while maintaining a balanced approach in its relations with other regional powers like India.
Tribute program
Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, currently on an official visit to China, participated in a ceremonial tribute at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. On Tuesday, he laid wreaths at the memorial to the martyrs of the Chinese People’s Revolution, honoring their sacrifices. This gesture is a customary act of respect in diplomatic visits, symbolizing solidarity and a commitment to strengthening Nepal-China relations.
The visit also includes high-level discussions with Chinese leaders to advance bilateral cooperation, focusing on infrastructure, economic partnerships, and the Belt and Road Initiative projects.
The tribute at the Memorial to the Martyrs of the Chinese People’s Revolution in Tiananmen Square in Beijing commemorates those who sacrificed their lives for China’s liberation, independence, and socialist development. This memorial does not relate to a single event but honors martyrs from various struggles, including the Chinese Revolution, the War of Resistance Against Japan, and the Chinese Civil War.
