‘Countries that emit excessive greenhouse gases should compensate Nepal’

Mugu, 19 October: Forest and Environment Minister Ain Bahadur Shahi has said that countries that emit excessive greenhouse gases should compensate Nepal. For this, he said, he will raise his voice at the COP 29th meeting to be held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22.

He said this at a joint project of the foundation held here today along with working with the Ministry of Forest and Environment and Climate Change to discuss the preparations for COP-29 and the impact of climate change on Karnali. “Nepal is suffering huge losses due to the effects of climate change. Therefore, countries that emit greenhouse gases should compensate Nepal. I will raise my voice on this matter at the COP 29th meeting”, Minister Shahi said. President of the Foundation Prajita Karki informed that all the 10 districts of Karnali as well as people’s representatives of Sindhupalchok, Solukhumbu and other concerned bodies will participate in the program and the program will be held for two days.

Birkh Rokaya, a resident of Chayannath Rara Municipality-9, said that the effects of global climate change, especially the residents of the high Himalayan region, have suffered a lot. “The snow that used to reach people’s knees eight to ten years ago now does not even fall to the feet. The water source near the village is running out. When it rains, there is no rain, the crops are no longer good. The residents of Karnali have to suffer the effects of climate change the most”, he said.

Tasi Lama Sherpa, vice president of Khumbu Pasanglhamu rural municipality, Solukhumvu, said that climate change has affected agriculture, tourism and health the most in the high Himalayan region. He mentioned that due to this effect, a few months ago, the flood that broke out in Himtal in Thame damaged the entire settlement. Chairman of Helambu rural municipality Sindhupalchok, Nima Galjan Sherpa, suggested that the government should bring a federal climate change act to allocate a budget of Rs.

Riksin Phumjan Lama, a snow leopard expert, said that as the temperature of the earth increases due to the effects of climate change, the wild animals found in the high mountain areas are looking for habitats for adaptation. He said that the danger of extinction of wild animals is increasing due to problems such as not even getting the necessary food for the animals, and the spread of weeds and grasses.
