A Destination Near the Capital: Bethanchok of Kavre District

A Scenic Getaway Near the Capital: Bethanchok in Kavre

Kavre, 27 May: A place where you can witness both sunrise and sunset from a single spot—alongside majestic views of the northern Himalayas and the flat plains to the south—Bethanchok offers truly mesmerizing natural beauty. Located at an elevation of over 3,000 meters above sea level, Bethanchok Narayansthan and Gajaram Hill lie within the Mahabharat mountain range of South Asia. In recent years, the area has earned the nickname “King of the Hills.”

Out of the 14 mountains in the world that exceed 8,000 meters in height, 8 can be seen from Bethanchok Narayansthan and Gajaram Hill on clear days. From here, one can enjoy sweeping views of the Himalayan range, from Makalu-Barun in the east to Dhaulagiri in the west. In addition to these towering peaks, visitors can also view the mid-hills, Mahabharat range, southern Chure hills, the flat Terai plains, and even parts of India.

The area is covered with lush green forests that provide peace to the eyes and tranquility to the soul. Every year, six species of rhododendron bloom across the hills, along with a variety of seasonal wildflowers that enhance the natural charm of the region.

Bethanchok is also ideal for observing wildlife such as wild boars, deer, and ghorals, as well as birds like the Himalayan Monal (Danphe) and Munal. The region is home to over 200 species of medicinal herbs, including Panchaule, Sugandhawal, Louth Salla, and Satuwa.

The dramatic rock formations and mysterious caves in the hills offer exciting opportunities for exploration and potential for rock climbing adventures. The continuously flowing rivers also suggest great potential for hydropower development and add to the natural beauty of the area.

From December to February, the area frequently receives snowfall, attracting thousands of young people from Kathmandu who come to enjoy the snow.

Just 44 km from Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, Bethanchok is a vibrant village in the Mahabharat range that combines natural, cultural, and ecological diversity—making it an extraordinary destination that is surprisingly close to the capital.

Bethanchok also holds great potential for tourism and agriculture. Some of its specialty foods include meals made from Himalayan rice, honey from Serana bees, traditional dishes made from allo (Himalayan nettle) and sisnoo (stinging nettle), as well as dairy products like khuwa. Local delicacies like dhido made from maize and wild fruits such as aiselu and kaafal can also be enjoyed here.

To cater to the increasing number of domestic and international visitors, Mount Mahabharat Homestay & Retreat and Janadu Organic Village Resort offer quality services. Mount Mahabharat, located in Bethanchok Ward 3, is the region’s first tourism-based organic farm and homestay. It provides accommodation, meals, yoga, meditation, and hiking/trekking guide services. Packages start at NPR 1,500 for one night/two days and NPR 2,800 for two nights/three days, including bed, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and hiking.

Janadu Organic Village Resort & Agro Farm, catering to those heading to Gajaram Hill and Bethanchok Narayansthan, offers quality services ranging from NPR 2,200 to NPR 3,000 per night depending on room type.

Tourist trails are being developed to connect different parts of the district to Bethanchok and Gajaram Hill. Hikers can easily reach hilltop viewpoints, making the area increasingly popular among nature lovers.

For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life in Kathmandu, Bethanchok and Gajaram Hill are ideal destinations for rejuvenation. From Ratnapark in Kathmandu, a 70-minute drive takes you to Panauti, followed by a 45-minute bus ride to Dhunkharka—the central rural market of Bethanchok. (A direct public bus is also available from Ratnapark to Dhunkharka.)

For those staying overnight, Mount Mahabharat Homestay and Janadu Resort are within a 45-minute to 1-hour walk from the Dhunkharka bus park. From the homestays, a scenic 90-minute to 2-hour hike leads to the elevated destinations of Bethanchok Narayansthan and Gajaram Hill.

In conclusion, just 44 km from Kathmandu lies the breathtakingly beautiful Bethanchok Narayansthan and Gajaram Hill. With panoramic views stretching from Bihar to Tibet and a vast swath of Nepal, this unique location is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists seeking a short yet unforgettable getaway.
