Tata Group has announced a compensation of ₹10 million (INR) per person to the families of passengers who lost their lives in the horrific plane crash near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, India.
The tragedy involved Air India Flight 171, operated under the Tata Group. Following the crash on Thursday, the deaths of at least 204 passengers have been confirmed. Out of the 242 people on board, only one survivor has been rescued so far, while official details about the condition of the remaining passengers are yet to be released.
Tata Sons and Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow over the incident through an official statement released on social media platform X. He stated, “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident involving Air India Flight 171. The pain we feel at this moment is beyond words. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families who have lost their loved ones, and we pray for the swift recovery of the injured.”
The statement further mentioned that the Tata Group will provide ₹10 million (INR) in compensation to each bereaved family, will bear the full cost of medical treatment for the injured, and will ensure all necessary support and care are provided to those affected.
In addition, Tata has pledged both financial and logistical support to address the health crisis that has emerged following the crash, including assistance in constructing a hostel at BJ Medical College.
Air India, originally founded by the Tata Group, was nationalized by the Indian government in 1953. After years of financial losses and failed attempts at revival, the national carrier was returned to Tata Group ownership in 2022.
This crash is being regarded as one of the most devastating air disasters of the past decade. The investigation is still in its early stages, with India’s Civil Aviation Authority and security agencies conducting inquiries at the crash site.
The exact cause of the crash is still unknown, but preliminary assessments suggest that engine failure or a serious landing gear malfunction could be the primary reasons behind the incident.
Following the tragedy, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and directed authorities to prioritize rescue and relief efforts with utmost urgency.
