In Canada’s general election, Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has secured a victory. After the win, Carney addressed his supporters and targeted U.S. President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Carney said, “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can dominate us — that will never happen.” He added, “Our old relationship with America is now over. We have overcome the shock of America’s betrayal, and we must take care of one another.”
Trump has been continuously threatening Canada with a trade war and has even talked about making Canada the 51st state of America.
Meanwhile, the New Democratic Party (NDP) has suffered a major defeat. Following the loss, leader Jagmeet Singh announced that he would resign from his position as party leader. Addressing his supporters, Jagmeet Singh said, “This is a night of disappointment for New Democrats.”
The NDP’s performance in Canada’s general election has been disappointing. It is reported that the party may be limited to just eight seats. In Canada, a party needs at least 12 seats in the House of Commons to attain official party status.
Who is Carney?
Mark Carney is the former Governor of the Bank of England. He was the first non-British person in the bank’s more than 300-year history to hold the top banking role.
Earlier, he led his country as the Governor of the Bank of Canada during the 2008 financial crisis. Unlike most prime ministerial candidates, Carney had never previously held political office.
However, last March, he easily won the Liberal Party leadership to replace outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Now, he is set to become Prime Minister again, this time by winning election from voters. He has proudly highlighted his experience dealing with global economic crises, and Canadians have viewed him as a leader capable of standing up to U.S. President Donald Trump. Carney has traveled widely and worked in places like New York, London, and Tokyo.
He was born in the remote northern town of Fort Smith in the Northwest Territories. Carney holds both Irish and Canadian citizenships. He obtained British citizenship in 2018 but recently expressed his intention to renounce his British and Irish citizenships.
His father was a high school principal. Carney attended Harvard University on a scholarship and studied there. In 1995, he earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Oxford University.
The topic of his thesis was: “Can domestic competition make an economy more competitive at the national level?” — an issue that will certainly test his role in facilitating internal trade as Canada faces American tariffs.
