New Year 2082 BS begins today

Kathmandu, 1st Baisakh(14 April): Today, the first day of the new year, Baisakh 1st of the Bikram Sambat 2082 BS, is being celebrated with joy and happiness across the country by exchanging greetings.

Today is the day when the Sun ends its transit in Pisces and begins its transit in Aries, which is also the first day of the year. Madhav Bhattarai, former chairman of the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Development Committee, says that Bikram Sambat is eternal because it moves with the movement of the sun. “Since Bikram is one of the 60 Sambats and is related to Aditya Sun, it is called Bikramaditya Sambat. Bikram Sambat runs according to the movement and position of the sun. It includes the characteristics of the Shaka Sambat and the practical qualities of the Ishbi Sambat,” he said.

Scholars say that this is a scientific year because the old year of this Sambat ends when the Sun enters Aries and leaves Pisces. The alignment of the solar and lunar phases also occurred in this Sambat. The Bikram Sambat began 3,044 years after the beginning of the Kali Yuga.

Today, everyone evaluates the success or failure of the work done in the previous year and makes plans and resolves to avoid repeating the failure and achieve success. Today, people take a bath early in the morning, clean their homes and courtyards, go to temples and monasteries to worship and visit, eat sweets, meet friends and acquaintances and exchange good wishes. Nepalis living in any corner of the world celebrate Baisakh 1st as the New Year.

According to Chandraman, the new Samvatsar, which begins on the first day of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, has already begun on Chaitra 17th. Prof. Shree Krishna Adhikari, Chairman of the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Bikash Samiti, said that the Samwasar named Siddharthi has started from Chaitra 17th (30 March).

According to Vedic Sanatan Hinduism, there are 60 Sambatsaras. These Sambatsaras have been rotating since time immemorial. The name of the first of the six Sambatsaras is Prabhava. The current Siddharti Samwasar is the 53rd Samwasar.

Former King extends New Year greetings

Former King Gyanendra Shah has expressed his best wishes for the happiness and peace of all Nepalis at home and abroad on the occasion of the New Year.

In a video message on the occasion of the New Year 2082 BS, he mentioned that he is always aware and sensitive to ensuring that Nepalis do not have conflicts among themselves and do not develop a sad state of mind of violence against each other. Similarly, he has also expressed sorrow over the violence, arson, vandalism, and human and material damage caused during the protests in Tinkune a few days ago.
