51st Thak Sports Tournament begins in Marfa

Myagdi, Ashoj 5 ( Sep 21): A sports and cultural competition with a history of half century has started today in Marfa, a tourist village located in Mustang Gharpazhong rural municipality-2. Member of the House of Representatives Yogesh Gauchan (Thakali) inaugurated the three-day competition organized by Thak Sports and Cultural Development Association. Krishna Kumar Sherchan, president of the organization, informed that the competition was organized with the aim of identifying sports talent, preserving culture and promoting tourism.

“The Thak sports, which have been held every year in different villages of Gharpazhong and Thasang Rural Municipality for 50 years, have historical and cultural significance”, he said, “men’s, women’s volleyball, star game (Dhanushvan) (above 40 years) and archery (open), folk dance. And Thakali song competition has been organized.”

In men’s volleyball in which six clubs participated, the winners and runners-up will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 150,000 and Rs 1 lakh along with shields, medals and certificates. It is said that the winners and runners-up of women’s volleyball participating in three clubs will receive a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and 50 thousand along with a shield, medal and certificate.

According to the association, Rs 50,000 will be awarded to the winner and Rs 25,000 to the runner-up in archery and Dhanusvan. An agricultural fair exhibition has also been organized as part of the competition, which is co-organized by the Milijuli Yuva Club of Marfa. Certificates and medals will be distributed to the first, second and third placers in the dance competition along with Rs 35,000, 25,000 and 15,000 cash respectively. In the opening ceremony, Marfa village was circumambulated by a rally with a tableau.

Prem Prasad Tulachan, former president of the organization and former member of the House of Representatives, Raju Lalchan, former secretary of the organization, Yogendra Sherchan, international archery player and Indrasingh Sherchan, supervisor of Beni-Jomsom-Korla road project, were honored with dosalla.

On the first day, there were three matches of the first round of men’s volleyball. In the opening match, Nilgiri Youth Club Tukuche, which was defeated along with Milijuli Youth Club Marfa, defeated Annapurna Youth Club Taklung by two to three sets in the next match. Dhaulagiri Youth Club Kowang defeated Nirmal Sports Club Leyte by three sets against two. In women’s volleyball, Nilgiri Youth Club is going to field Pratibha Mali, Salina Shrestha, Sophia Pun of the national team. Milijuli Youth Club has invited players from Myagdi and Kaski who have participated in provincial and national competitions to participate in the competition.
