UN sends congratulatory message to newly appointed Prime Minister Karki

Kathmandu, 13 Sep: United Nations Resident Coordinator for Nepal Hana Singer Hamdi has congratulated Nepal’s first female Prime Minister Sushila Karki and sent a message of good wishes.

In a statement issued by the United Nations Nepal, the United Nations congratulated the Nepali people on the appointment of the Prime Minister and expressed its commitment to support the people’s aspirations for peace, justice, transparency, accountability, and progress.

House of Representatives dissolved, election announced for 5 March 2026

President Ram Chandra Poudel has appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the Prime Minister. The newly appointed Prime Minister, known as a fearless and skilled justice, recommended the dissolution of the House of Representatives immediately after taking oath on Friday. 

President Poudel has dissolved the current House of Representatives, effective from 11 pm on Friday, 12 September, as recommended by Prime Minister Karki. According to Rupesh Jung Thapa Magar, Deputy Secretary at the President’s Office, President Poudel has set the date for the election of the House of Representatives on Thursday, Falgun 21, 2082(5 March 2026).

Karki became the first female Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal after the Genji Movement’s protests on Bhadra 23 and 24(8-9 Sep) overthrew the coalition of the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (UML). The country got a new Prime Minister after a dialogue with President Poudel, Chief of Army Staff of the Nepali Army Ashokraj Sigdel, representatives of the Gen Z Movement and other stakeholders at the President’s Office on Friday. 

Immediately after the country was devastated by the protests on Bhadra 23 and 24, there was continuous dialogue coordinated by President Poudel and the Nepali Army. On Bhadra 25 and 26(10-11 Sep), there was dialogue between President Poudel, Chief of Army Staff Sigdel and representatives of Gen Z. President Poudel also had a separate dialogue with the constitutional expert on Thursday. Despite continuous dialogue, there was a delay in appointing a Prime Minister in the country as Gen Z activists divided into different groups and tried to take ownership of the movement. However, after serious discussions with the group leading the Gen Z movement, Chief of Army Staff Sigdel held serious discussions with the group on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Gen Z proposed that former Chief Justice Karki be appointed as the Prime Minister. 

Newly appointed Prime Minister Karki appeared in plain clothes while taking oath on Friday. While taking oath in front of a crowd of high officials including President Poudel, Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Prakash Man Singh Raut, his simple lifestyle was also inspiring for the coming generation. President Poudel wished the newly appointed Prime Minister Karki a successful tenure and urged him to make himself and the country successful. Gen Z activists reached the President’s House, Sheetal Niwas, to congratulate him. They also expressed their trust and confidence that Prime Minister Karki would provide a solution for the country. The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the National Assembly were not present on the occasion. “The news came at the last moment, I was out, I could not be present,” said National Assembly President Narayan Prasad Dahal. The swearing-in of the newly appointed Prime Minister Karki did not take place at the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday. 

Statement from the Office of the President 

Rupesh Jung Thapa Magar, Deputy Secretary at the President’s Office, has informed that President Ram Chandra Poudel, ‘in his capacity as the Head of State, on the basis of the recommendation and consent of the Prime Minister, has appointed Sushila Karki, Morang, as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal, in accordance with the constitutionally restrictive provision entrusted to the President by the Constitution of Nepal, with a view to holding another election to the House of Representatives within six (6) months.’ 

Addressing the unique and extraordinary situation that has arisen in the country, he has clarified through a press release that the new Prime Minister has been appointed in accordance with the wishes and aspirations expressed by the young generation, in consultation with political parties and stakeholders, and in accordance with the Constitution of Nepal, exercising the inherent constitutional powers of the President to uphold and protect the Constitution of Nepal and promote the national unity of Nepal. According to him, the newly appointed Prime Minister Karki has taken the oath of office and secrecy of the Prime Ministerial post before President Poudel in accordance with Article 80 of the Constitution of Nepal.
