US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday while returning to Washington aboard Air Force One, following his three-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany confirmed that Trump spoke with both Zelenskyy and other European NATO leaders during the flight.

According to CNN, Trump first discussed with Zelenskyy about the progress of talks held in Alaska before engaging with European leaders. Following their conversation, Zelenskyy announced he would travel to Washington on Monday at Trump’s invitation, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to discuss ending the violence and war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy emphasized his commitment to establishing peace in Ukraine.

During the call, Trump briefed Zelenskyy about his Alaska meeting with Putin and its key discussion points, with Zelenskyy acknowledging America’s crucial role in the current situation. Speaking to Fox News after the Putin meeting, Trump stated “the ball is now in Zelenskyy’s court,” noting significant progress had been made though no final agreement was reached. He stressed that while European leaders needed to be involved, ultimate decisions rested with Zelenskyy, and mentioned preparations for another potential meeting.

Meanwhile, Putin reiterated Russia’s four main demands during a press conference: Ukrainian territorial concessions to Russia, military reduction, banning NATO membership, and government change in Kyiv – all conditions rejected by Ukraine and Western nations. European leaders, who held virtual talks with Trump following the Putin meeting, firmly stated they would not accept any compromises on Ukraine’s sovereignty or territorial integrity, including land swaps. Trump assured them that only Ukraine could make decisions regarding its territory.
