The MAHA comedy duo completed 45 years of partnership

Kathmandu, 27 April: “MaHa Jodi” — the iconic duo of Madan Krishna Shrestha and Hari Bansha Acharya — has become a beloved name in the Nepali performing arts. Like two wheels of the same chariot, they have journeyed together, creating a legacy of collaboration and creativity. From national to international stages, through satire, drama, and groundbreaking television series, these legendary artists have captured the hearts of audiences far and wide. Today, Shrestha and Acharya stand as shining examples of excellence and inspiration within Nepali society, admired for both their artistry and their enduring partnership.

Today, on Baisakh 14, “MaHa Jodi” celebrates 45 years of collaboration. To remain a beloved duo for nearly half a century, consistently winning the hearts of audiences and establishing a respected identity, is a true testament to their sincerity and dedication. Over these 45 years, working under the name MaHa Jodi, both artists earned not just fame but fortune as well. Yet, despite the opportunities for greed that often come with success, they never allowed such temptations to overshadow their bond. As a result, dedicating themselves to the art for nearly half a century, MaHa Jodi has succeeded in capturing the hearts of audiences and securing a special place in the spirit of the Nepali people.

Reflecting on their journey, actor Acharya shared that he considers himself part of a truly fortunate generation. Over the course of their artistic careers, they had the privilege of witnessing — and adapting to — profound technological and political changes. “We performed satirical plays on stage, produced audio cassettes, created television series, and acted in films,” he said. “In that sense, both Madan Dai and I were blessed to belong to a generation that had the opportunity to present our work across every available platform. Even today, we continue to honor our legacy by transforming our earlier creations with the latest technology, making them accessible in digital formats,” Acharya added.

In this context, actor Acharya mentioned that the enduring journey of “MaHa Jodi” has been possible because of their mutual relationship, family warmth, and the love from their audience. “Had the audience not wished to see us together, it would not have been possible for us to travel this long path. Our families also consistently supported and helped us move forward, without interfering in our relationship. Moreover, the work we did gave both of us recognition and respect. We never harbored ego against one another and always presented ourselves according to the sentiments of our audience,” Acharya said.

Similarly, actor Shrestha emphasized that working together leads to success. Now 75 years old, Shrestha remains active in films and advertisements. He shared that they never let the pursuit of profit overshadow their work. “We never chased money; we remained focused on our work. That dedication brought us both name and earnings. Since our name and work are shared, there was never a need for us to overthink anything. Honesty, goodwill, and the desire to see each other succeed are what have allowed us to journey this long as MaHa Jodi,” Shrestha explained.

He also expressed that they intend to continue working together as long as their health permits. Most recently, both of them appeared together in the film Mahapurush. After that, actor Acharya has acted in Mahajatra, Bhootan, and Haribahadurko Jutta, while Shrestha has worked in films like Pahad and Paran. Whether during film shoots or social gatherings, it has become natural for people to look for one when they see the other. “Whenever someone asks me, ‘Where is Hari Ji?’, I jokingly say, ‘He’s right here within me’,” Shrestha said with a smile. “Not just at events, but even during film shoots, people often ask.”

Director Pradeep Bhattarai, who has been associated with MaHa Communication since 2060 BS (2003 AD), is considered like a family member. Starting as a general assistant in their TV series, Bhattarai has worked as chief assistant director and sometimes as director in several productions. In the context of films, he directed Shatru Gate and Mahapurush, both starring the MaHa Jodi.

“For me, they are like living gods,” said Bhattarai. “Their actions reflect their character. They are my teachers in the truest sense — whatever words I use feel insufficient to describe them. They love me like their own son.” Bhattarai also noted how people always question when the MaHa duo is not seen together, whether during TV series shoots or film projects. He believes that MaHa Jodi is “two in one and one in two,” meaning where there is ‘M’, there is also ‘H’. Because of this bond, Bhattarai dreams of creating an outstanding film starring them both.

“I know their capabilities up close, and that’s why I have a deep desire to make an exceptional film featuring them. I’m already thinking of a story. The audience’s expectations from them have only grown, and I don’t want to direct just for the sake of it. I, too, feel happy just seeing them perform on screen,” Bhattarai shared.

Widely known as comedians, the MaHa Jodi have been exploring different types of roles recently. In Acharya’s recent film Bhuthan, he is seen laughing only in a single scene. Since Balidan, Acharya has transitioned into more serious roles. Director Bhattarai mentioned that although humor was dominant in their earlier performances — as it is one of the nine essential emotions in acting — both artists are capable of delivering in a wide range of characters.

“They are complete actors,” Bhattarai said. “Even during the TV series days, we experimented with different and unique styles. I had already seen the full range of acting potential in them, which is why I chose to portray them differently in Mahapurush. Now, gradually, the audience is also realizing that they are versatile and universally beloved artists.”

Just last year, MaHa Jodi toured Nepal and abroad with their production MaHa Jatra. Moving forward, they remain committed to continuing their partnership. In today’s age, where relationships often break quickly, the fact that senior artists Shrestha and Acharya have maintained their friendship and collaboration for 45 years speaks volumes about their honesty, mutual respect, and unwavering bond.
