Kathmandu, 18 Bhadra (3 Sep): Mahendra Maharjan of Thamel can not sleep happily as the night draws near. The only reason he can not sleep is because of the loud noise pollution as he lives near Chhaya Center. The night business of Thamel, which was closed after Covid, has been resumed since last May.
The government said that Thamel and Durbarmarg area will be opened 24 hours, the night business of Thamel has started running. With the aim of making night tourism business dignified and disciplined, the businessmen have made and implemented a code of conduct. Maharjan said that even though the established code of conduct is implemented by the businessmen, the sound pollution in the Thamel area is caused by visitors who come to have fun in clubs and dance bars for the short period of time.
Locals say that the biggest problem of Thamel’s night business is sound pollution. Residents of Thamel and the surrounding areas were affected by loud noises, hotels and clubs playing music at night, said local Maharjan.
“We have been requesting the clubs and hotels several times, so far there has been no hearing”, he said to RSS. Maharjan mentioned that not only the locals but also the guests staying in hotels and tourists should help.
Tourism businessman Bhabiswor Sharma said that the affected tourists have been complaining about their health problems due to not being able to sleep at night in the hotel. He was also the former chairman of the Thamel Tourism Development Council, informed that the locals, tourists and businessmen are suffering due to non compliance with the 24 hours code of conduct.
