Agriculture Minister Adhikari-Speech for China-Nepal trade

Kathmandu, December 16: Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Ramnath Adhikari has said that demand for meat from livestock raised on herbs and medicinal plants in the Himalayan and hilly regions of Nepal has increased abroad.

Addressing a program organized to sign an agreement to export  buffalo meat to China, Minister Adhikari said that the government is ready to export meat to China as per the demand by ensuring the quality of the meat. He emphasized that the quality of meat should be ensured from the place of production to the place of consumption.

“Since the Chinese love various dishes of beef, more jobs should be created by exporting it from Nepal. This has further encouraged Nepali farmers to raise cattle and buffaloes. Further studies will be conducted on taxes targeting livestock products,” said Minister Adhikari. He was committed to promoting the new generation, who are technology-friendly, in such work. Minister Adhikari said that animal husbandry can be an important means of creating employment in the country.

Himalayan Food International Pvt. Ltd. of Nepal and Shanghai Ji Yang Food Corporation of China signed an agreement to explore the export of buffalo meat products from Nepal to China. The program, organized in Kathmandu, marked a step towards diversifying Nepal’s agricultural exports.

The agreement highlights China’s increasing demand for buffalo and bovine meat, as consumption continues to grow with its rising living standards. Nepal, however, faces significant regulatory challenges to meet China’s stringent food safety and hygiene standards enforced by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC). This includes requirements for safety certification, disease prevention measures, and the establishment of traceable supply chains.

While the agreement reflects promising opportunities, its success hinges on addressing gaps in Nepal’s meat production systems and aligning them with international standards. This collaboration could pave the way for further investments in Nepal’s meat processing and agricultural sectors, provided the necessary infrastructure and quality controls are put in place.
