The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus Summit, organized in China, is starting today.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will also address the conference, which begins on Monday at the Tianjin Meijian Convention Center in China.
Prime Minister Oli traveled to China on 30 August to participate in the conference.
What is Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit is a meeting of the heads of state or government of the member countries of the SCO. It is the highest decision-making gathering of the organization, where leaders come together to discuss regional and international issues, review the progress of cooperation, and set future directions.
The SCO itself was established in 2001 in Shanghai, China, with the aim of promoting regional security, political stability, economic cooperation, and cultural exchange. Its founding members were China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Later, India and Pakistan joined in 2017, and Iran became a full member in 2023. The organization has its headquarters in Beijing, China, and also includes observer states and dialogue partners.
At the summit, leaders typically address challenges such as terrorism, extremism, and cross-border crime, while also focusing on trade, energy, connectivity, and development projects. Beyond economics and security, the summit also serves as a stage for cultural and educational cooperation, reflecting the diversity of its member states.
The SCO Summit holds global significance because it brings together some of the world’s most populous and influential countries, covering nearly half of humanity and a large share of the world’s economy. It is often viewed as a counterbalance to Western political and security alliances, giving Asian countries a platform to voice their collective stance on international affairs.
