Promoting Buddhist tourism in Myanmar

Kathmandu, Chaitra 23: Buddhist tourism has been promoted in Yangon, Myanmar with the aim of attracting more Buddhist tourists to Nepal from Myanmar, which has a majority Buddhist population. The Nepal Tourism Board has started promoting tourism by organizing the ‘Nepal-Myanmar Trade and Tourism Expo-2025’ in Yangon.

The Board stated in a press release today that the promotion of Buddhist tourism was emphasized at the expo held on 22 and 23 March in collaboration with the Nepali Embassy in Myanmar on the occasion of the 65th diplomatic relations between Nepal and Myanmar. Along with promoting Buddhist tourism, Nepali tourism products, information technology solutions and other items were exhibited.

The expo was attended by 16 tourism companies from Nepal and 30 from Myanmar. Nepal has emphasized on promoting Buddhist tourism and urged Myanmar tourists to visit Lumbini through flights to Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa, the press release said.

In addition, the board also mentioned that the Nepali information technology sector has been introduced to make Myanmar a partner for the development of the banking and financial technology sector. The program was jointly inaugurated by Myanmar Federal Minister U Tun Oun, Nepal’s Ambassador to Myanmar Harish Chandra Ghimire, Nepal Chamber of Commerce President Shiva Agrawal, and Myanmar Chamber of Commerce President U A Win.

Federal Minister U Tun Onn mentioned the need for cooperation in tourism promotion by strengthening trade relations between Nepal and Myanmar. He pointed out the need for cooperation between the governments and private sectors of both countries to emphasize tourism development, organizing mutual trade fairs, and human resource development.

The event was attended by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thin, government officials, business representatives from both countries, the Nepali community in Myanmar, and representatives from the tourism sector. During the program, a joint meeting organized by the Nepal Tourism Board and the Myanmar Tourism Federation discussed strengthening cooperation between tourism representatives of Nepal and Myanmar, according to the board.

The Nepali Embassy organized a ‘live food station’ on the second day of the event featuring Nepali dishes such as momos, celery rotis, potato pickles, and Nepali tea. Ambassadors and diplomatic chiefs of various countries serving in Myanmar also tasted Nepali cuisine. Similarly, the Tourism Board has committed to further strengthening relations with Myanmar, promoting Buddhist tourism, and exploring potential in the information technology sector through joint initiatives.
