Kathmandu, 1 Magh(14 January): President Ram Chandra Poudel has expressed his belief that the Maghe Sankranti festival will inspire everyone to build a civilized, cultured and egalitarian society while preserving nature and culture. Sending a message of best wishes on the occasion of Maghe Sankranti festival today, he has wished happiness, peace and prosperity to Nepali sisters and brothers at home and abroad. This festival is celebrated with joy by different castes of the country in their own way.
The Tharu community celebrates Maghe Sankranti as a new year. The people of Tarai celebrate it as a ‘Nahan’ or bathing festival. On this day, it is a tradition to bathe in various holy rivers of the country including Barah Kshetra, Devghat, Ridi Kshetra and offer prayers in temples, President Poudel has mentioned in his message of greetings. Similarly, it is a tradition to enjoy meals with family by eating dishes such as ghee, chaku, yam, sesame laddu, cell roti and khichdi.
President Poudel said that if a common Nepali identity can be built by connecting cultural and ethnic diversity by celebrating such unique and original festivals and festivals, it will play an important role in introducing Nepal to the world. He expressed his belief that such festivals in the multi-ethnic, multilingual, and multicultural Nepali society will help further strengthen national unity by maintaining brotherhood, mutual harmony, and tolerance among Nepalese.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has extended his best wishes to everyone on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti and Maghi. Prime Minister Oli expressed his best wishes through social media today. “Today is Maghe Sankranti, also the Maghi festival of the Tharu community in the Terai region. This day is also called Makar Sankranti as the sun transits from Sagittarius to Capricorn,” the message said. “Today, it is customary to eat ghee, chaku, yam, sesame, khitro and various types of kandamul and ghungi among the Tharu community. Best wishes to everyone on Makar Sankranti and Maghi!!”

The Tharu community celebrates Maghi festival with great joy as a new year by dancing, meeting relatives, and eating. During this festival, people bathe in the holy river and Triveni and enjoy eating ghee, chaku, sesame laddu, yam and other delicacies. Fairs are held at holy pilgrimage sites including Devghat, Barahakshetra, Triveni Dham, Ridi. Maghe Sankranti is also known as Makar Sankranti as the sun enters Capricorn from Sagittarius. Uttarayan begins from today.
