North Korea has ratified a historic security agreement with Russia. This has further strengthened security cooperation. Based on this agreement, Pyongyang has sent thousands of troops to help Moscow fight against Ukraine.
The agreement formalized months of military ties between the two socialist countries, allies since the Cold War. Seoul and its ally the United States have accused nuclear-armed North Korea of sending thousands of troops to Russia. North Korean soldiers were equipped with Russian uniforms and gathered at the border near Kusark, military officials of that country said. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the agreement was approved as an order from leader Kim Jong-un. This information came from North Korea after Russian lawmakers voted unanimously last week to approve the agreement signed by President Vladimir Putin.
KCNA said, “This agreement is said to be effective from the day both parties exchange the documents of approval.” North Korea has become the most vocal and important supporter of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Western nations have long accused Pyongyang of supplying Moscow with artillery shells and missiles for use in Ukraine, but that support has grown in recent weeks as thousands of North Korean troops prepare to join the war. The agreement between the two countries was signed during the Kremlin chief’s visit to North Korea last June.
This has forced both countries to provide ‘immediate’ military assistance in the event of an attack on the other and cooperate internationally to counter Western sanctions. Putin called the agreement signed last June a ‘break through document’. “With bilateral approval, Pyongyang and Moscow will claim legitimacy for North Korea’s military deployment in Russia,” said Hong Min, a senior analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification.
North Korea has officially ratified a security agreement with Russia, solidifying their growing military alliance. This landmark pact, initially signed in June during Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea, mandates that each country will provide military support if the other is attacked.Â
The treaty has stirred concerns in the U.S. and South Korea, who view this alliance as a challenge to regional stability. The agreement also paves the way for possible further North Korean troop deployments to Russia in the future, marking a significant shift in the geopolitical landscape
