Netanyahu reportedly preparing to order complete takeover of Gaza, overriding IDF concerns and potential threats to hostages

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly planning to bring a proposal before the cabinet to fully occupy the Gaza Strip, even as some within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) raise serious concerns.

According to Hebrew media reports, Netanyahu has referred to the “occupation of the Strip” in private discussions with ministers while outlining his vision for expanding military operations in Gaza. This marks a significant rhetorical shift as the Israeli government moves toward decisions on the future of the ongoing conflict.

A senior official close to Netanyahu, cited by Ynet, stated: “The decision has been made — we’re heading for full occupation of the Gaza Strip.”

The official added that military operations would proceed even in areas where hostages are believed to be held. Referring to IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, who is said to oppose the plan, the official remarked, “If the chief of staff doesn’t agree, he should resign.”

At present, the IDF maintains control over roughly 75 percent of Gaza. Under the proposed plan, Israeli forces would move to seize the remaining areas, placing the entire territory under Israeli control.

The broader implications of such an operation for Gaza’s civilian population and humanitarian aid groups remain uncertain.

The IDF has said it opposes taking over the whole Strip, with the army assessing it could take years to clear all Hamas infrastructure. It could also put hostages in danger of being executed by their captors should troops approach where they are being held.

Netanyahu said earlier Monday that he would convene the cabinet to order the IDF on how to proceed with the war effort, with some believing the premier could ask the army to hold back in order to further give hostage talks a chance to percolate.

On Sunday, Channel 12 news reported that a divide had emerged within the security cabinet on the potential occupation of Gaza, with the premier and Defense Minister Israel Katz allegedly remaining undecided.

Reportedly supporting the expansion of military operations in Gaza are Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, Military Secretary Major General Roman Gofman, and Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs.

In contrast, those said to favor pursuing a ceasefire and hostage release agreement include IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, Shas party leader Aryeh Deri, National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi, Mossad Director David Barnea, the Shin Bet’s lead negotiator (referred to by the Hebrew initial “Mem”), and retired Major General Nitzan Alon, who is leading the military’s efforts on the hostage issue.
