NASA astronaut shares stunning images of 2025 Maha Kumbha Mela from ISS

NASA astronaut Donald Pettit recently shared captivating images of the 2025 Maha Kumbha Mela, taken from the International Space Station (ISS). In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Petit commented, “2025 Mahakumbha Mela Ganga River Pilgrimage at night from ISS. The world’s largest human gathering is well lit.”

His perspective highlights the vast scale of this event, which has attracted millions of devotees from around the world. Over 110 million people have participated in the ongoing Maha Kumbha Mela in Prayagraj in the first 14 days of the religious festival, making it the world’s largest spiritual gathering.

The event, which takes place every 12 years, is expected to continue to attract large crowds until its conclusion on February 26, 2025. With millions of devotees arriving from all corners of the world, the festival remains a vibrant celebration of faith and unity. Pilgrims travel to the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati (now extinct) rivers for a ritual bath believed to wash away sins and pave the way to moksha (salvation).

This holy dip (bath) is central to the spiritual significance of the festival, which is rooted in Sanatan Dharma. This gathering occurs during a time of astronomical alignment that creates a rare and auspicious opportunity for spiritual purification and devotion.

The Maha Kumbha Mela not only unites millions of religious devotees but also carries profound spiritual and cultural significance. Despite the cold weather, a large number of devotees braved the cold to bathe in the holy waters of the Sangam.

This event is an important symbol of collective spirituality, transcending boundaries of language, lifestyle, and tradition. As the celebrations continue, authorities are making extensive preparations for Mauni Amavasya on January 29. An even bigger crowd is expected on that day.

The expected presence of an estimated 450 million visitors during this period will create a historic opportunity for India. The Maha Kumbha Mela is becoming an awe-inspiring spectacle for visitors, as people from diverse backgrounds and walks of life come together in Prayagraj for a common spiritual purpose.
