MG’s ‘luxury’ car compared to Tesla and Mercedes, how much does it cost?

Kathmandu, 20 Aug: The automobile sector has now entered the era of electric vehicles. Many countries are promoting electric vehicles over petrol and diesel vehicles. Nepal is one of the world leaders in the use of electric vehicles.

With growing consumer interest, companies around the world are bringing new models of electric vehicles to the market. Among them, the ‘IM-6’ model from Morris Garages (MG) has managed to capture the interest and attention of many.

MG’s premium electric SUV is being compared by auto reviewers around the world to luxury vehicles like Tesla’s Model Y and Mercedes’ EQC.

This MG model has reached the peak of discussion around the world due to its modern design, high battery capacity, use of cutting-edge technology, and suitability for long journeys. It has been described as a vehicle that provides a ‘smart driving’ experience.

Paramount Motors, MG’s official distributor for Nepal, has brought this model to the Nepali market.

According to Shirish Murarka, Managing Director of Paramount Motors, the price of this vehicle in the Nepali market is 7.4 million 99 thousand rupees.

In this story, we are discussing the features of the MG IM-6.

Paramount’s Managing Director Murarka says that this vehicle is suitable for Nepal’s roads and all types of weather.

There are five reasons behind his saying this:

First, the ‘turning radius’ of this vehicle is 5.06 meters. This means that it can easily turn even on narrow roads. The lower this number, the greater the ability to turn on narrow roads. A vehicle with a larger turning radius requires a wider space to turn.

That is why Murarka says that this vehicle will be easy to drive on narrow roads in urban areas, including Kathmandu.

According to him, it can turn on a road that is 5 to 6 meters wide without reversing. It can turn even more easily on a road that is 10 meters wide.

The second reason is the 6.89 inch gap between the lowest part of the vehicle and the ground. This is called ‘ground clearance’ in technical terms.

The roads in Nepal are very rough. There are jolts here and there. If the gap between the bottom of the vehicle and the ground is small, there is a risk of hitting the ground when driving on rough roads. Murarka says that the MG IM-6 is easy to drive.

Thirdly, this vehicle is not difficult to drive even when it rains or is foggy.

Among the various seasons in Nepal, during monsoon and winter, when fog sets in, it becomes difficult for the driver to see the view ahead clearly. The MG IM-6 has 6 cameras installed for such situations, which allow a 360-degree view of the surrounding area of the vehicle.

According to Murarka, one camera is located at the front of the vehicle, just below the grille. The second camera is located at the rear of the vehicle. Similarly, there are cameras located under the right and left looking glasses, just above the windshield, and on the bumper.

“With the help of these cameras, you can see the scene around the vehicle even when it is raining heavily or foggy,” he said. “This reduces the risk of accidents due to weather.”

The fourth reason is the ‘crab’ mode in the vehicle.

This helps the vehicle to move smoothly. It makes it easier to park in tight spaces and drive on narrow roads. At the same time, it also makes it easier to turn the vehicle in tight corners.

And the fifth reason, the ‘Intelligent Four-Wheel Steering’ system.

This is one of the key features of the MG IM-6 vehicle. It helps maintain balance even when driving at high speeds.

Another key feature of this vehicle is the ‘Driver Monitoring System’.

This system alerts the driver when they are distracted while driving. For this, cameras installed in the vehicle continuously monitor the driver’s face. If the driver falls asleep or is distracted, the system emits a sound or vibration.

The company says this will help reduce accidents caused by drivers falling asleep or not paying attention to the road.

There are seven airbags in the car to protect passengers in the event of an accident. These airbags deploy automatically when the car hits something or in an accident. This prevents the passenger’s body from hitting the wall of the car.

“In an accident, most passengers are injured by hitting the wall. If the airbag is good and strong, this risk is reduced,” he said.

According to him, there are one airbag each for the driver and front passenger. Similarly, there are two in front of the rear passengers, one on each side of the vehicle from the front to the back, and one in the driver’s knee.

Now let’s talk about the battery capacity and speed of the MG IM-6

Its battery capacity is 75 kilowatt-hours. On a full charge, it can travel up to 450 kilometers. This is the distance from Kathmandu to Pokhara and back. This vehicle can travel at a speed of 210 kilometers per hour.

It can be charged using both AC and DC charging. DC charging is faster. It takes only 20 minutes to charge from 30 percent to 80 percent. Its battery life is about 10 years.

This vehicle has a self-parking feature. For this, the vehicle scans the parking space using its camera. The vehicle itself sees whether the vehicle can fit in that space or how to turn. After that, the driver only needs to use the brakes and steering to park the vehicle.

This vehicle is available in 6 colors — black, gray, white, light pink, blue, and beige (pale yellow).

The exterior design of the car is very sporty and cool. The rear has thin LED taillights, which make it look attractive. To open its doors, you just need to touch the handle. The sensor detects your touch and the door opens automatically.

The interior of the car is also comfortable. We find ample use of technology. It has a 26.3-inch wide driver display and a 10.5-inch touchscreen infotainment. Apart from that, there are features like a panoramic glass roof, high-quality leather seats, premium speakers, and more.

The car can be illuminated with 256 different colors, making it attractive from the inside. The double-layered glass prevents noise from the inside from being heard outside. At the same time, the temperature inside the car is not affected by the weather outside.

There are pockets and water bottle holders inside all four doors, front and rear. There are also four cup holders. There is also a place to store food for long journeys. Its ‘bootspace’, also known as the rear trunk, has a capacity of 415 liters. It can easily accommodate three to four 24-inch suitcases.

The MG brand originated in the UK in the 1920s. The company is now owned by China’s SAIC Motor Corporation. The company has been prioritizing electric vehicles over petrol and diesel vehicles for some time now.

One of them, the IM-6, was first exhibited by the company at various international auto shows in early 2025.
