Landslide-blocked Prithvi highway operation still uncertain

Malekhu (Dhading), Ashoj 12 (Sep 28): The Naubise Nagadhunga road that enters the capital Kathmandu from the eastern districts has been blocked since Thursday evening due to incessant rain. The Naubise Muglin section of the highway has been blocked for nearly 30 hours due to continuous rain, landslides and slippery soil.

Landslides have blocked the road in some places, while the small landslides that fell from the walls that were destroyed during the expansion of the highway, and the rubbles that fell down along with the water from the river, have also piled up on the highway.

Three vehicles buried in a landslide this morning in Khatripauwa, which is on the border of Dhading and Kathmandu, have not yet been recovered. Superintendent of Police of the District Police Office, Gautam Mishra, informed that the place where the vehicle was buried could not be reached due to the large landslide. “The water is constantly falling, the landslide has not stopped. Landslides are being removed from both sides. Only the shape of the vehicle buried in the landslide has been seen. It is not possible to ascertain whether there was any human loss in the vehicle or not”, Mishra said, “Until the water stops completely, the possibility of opening the road is very low.”

Superintendent of Police Mishra informed that because the electricity and internet towers were damaged due to rain and landslides, even the telephone and police sets were not working and the police had problems in reporting. Apart from Khatripauwa in Naubise Nagadhunga section, landslides have occurred in places under the Prithvi highway. Thakre rural municipality has seven kilos, Khairghari and Benighat rural municipality-3 Salanghat has the biggest landslide.

There have been many small landslides in the upper areas of Galchi and Gajuri and the Jogimara area of Benighat. Police Inspector and Spokesperson of the District Police Office, Prahlad Silwal, informed that although the rains have decreased somewhat since this afternoon, the landslides have not stopped in some places, so it is difficult to operate the highway.

The Dhadingbesi Malekhu road section, which was blocked by the landslide since Saturday morning, has been opened in one direction. Landslides occurred at 6 places in a distance of 17 km. Now, the landslide has been removed so that one-way traffic can run from all places.
