Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu announces death of Hamas chief

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the death of Yahya Sinwar, the head of the Palestinian Islamic militant group (Hamas) and the main planner of the terrible attack on October 7 last year, on Thursday night. Prime Minister Netanyahu has also instructed his aides to inform the families of the Israeli hostages about the death of the Hamas leader.

US Vice President Kamala Harris said the death of the Hamas leader was ‘just’. “Hamas must eliminate the threat it poses to Israel,” said Harris, the Democratic candidate for next month’s US presidential election, “so that the world can feel safer and the families of the victims can feel relieved.” The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that three Hamas militants were killed during their operations in Gaza. It is said that one of the three fighters who died in the Israeli attack was the head of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar.

The IDF shared a post on X and wrote, “Three people were killed during the IDF operation in Gaza. The IDF and ISA are conducting the necessary investigations to scientifically confirm the possibility that one of the terrorists is Yahya Sinwar.” On Tuesday, the IDF and Shin Bet security agencies said three Hamas “terrorists” involved in the October 7 attack were killed in recent airstrikes. This incident happened a few weeks after the death of another high-ranking leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon.

Earlier, another senior leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, died in Iran. Although Tehran and Hamas have blamed Israel for the attack in Haniya’s death, Israel has neither accepted nor denied this accusation. Recently, the IDF announced the death of high-ranking Hamas officials, including Rawhi Mushtaha, head of the Hamas government in Gaza, and Sameh al-Siraj, who held security responsibilities in the Hamas political bureau.

According to the Times of Israel, on Tuesday, the IDF said that about 20 Hamas fighters were killed in an airstrike and clashes in Jabalia. According to the Israeli army, during the war, the army found and destroyed a weapons depot and other weapons. The army said, “This operation will continue as long as necessary and the attack will be planned and the terrorist formations in the area will be completely destroyed.”

On Monday, the IDF ordered the relocation of Palestinians from Beit Hanoun, Jabalia and Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza to an Israeli-designated humanitarian zone south of Gaza, The Times of Israel reported.
