Kathmandu, 21 May: Police have completed their investigation into the unwanted activities that occurred during the protest held on Chaitra 15 (March 28) in support of former King Gyanendra Shah. Kathmandu police are preparing to submit their report to the Office of the Government Attorney. An official involved in the investigation told Ratopati that the report would be submitted by Wednesday evening.
The police have recommended that eight individuals, including medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai, be prosecuted for homicide-related offenses. The protest, led by Durga Prasai and Nawaraj Subedi, resulted in the arson of a building belonging to Sunalo Indreni Savings and Credit Cooperative, chaired by Prem Bahadur Shrestha. The building suffered extensive damage due to the fire.
Journalist Suresh Rajak lost his life in the incident. The police have identified Saroj Gautam (22) of Sunapati Rural Municipality in Ramechhap, and Gokarna Shahi alias Anup Bikram Thakuri (20) of Panchdewal Municipality-5 in Achham, along with Durga Prasai and five others, as individuals who should be charged with homicide.
Investigating officers are currently finalizing the report. The police have stated in the report that the accused should be prosecuted on charges including homicide, attempted murder, crimes against the state, criminal vandalism, and organized crime.
Among those arrested in connection with the incident, 26 individuals are currently in custody on charges of crimes against the state, and 27 are detained for criminal vandalism. Police had previously completed the investigation on some of the accused and released them on bail.
The Tinkune incident refers to a violent pro-monarchy protest that occurred on March 28, 2025, in the Tinkune area of Kathmandu, Nepal. The demonstration was organized by supporters of former King Gyanendra Shah and led by medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai, advocating for the restoration of the monarchy and the declaration of Nepal as a Hindu state.
The protest escalated into violence when demonstrators clashed with security forces, leading to widespread vandalism and arson. Protesters set fire to private homes, shops, media offices, and government properties. Notably, a building belonging to Sunalo Indreni Savings and Credit Cooperative was torched, resulting in the death of journalist Suresh Rajak, who was trapped inside while covering the event.
Another fatality occurred when Sabin Maharjan, a 29-year-old protester from Kirtipur, was shot during clashes with police and later died from his injuries. In total, the unrest resulted in two deaths and numerous injuries.
