Kathmandu, 18 Oct: Police Inspector Durga Rai, who prevented prisoners from escaping during the protest on Bhadra 24 (September 9), has been awarded the ‘Yogendra Memorial Bravery Award’.
Inspector Rai, currently serving at the Nepal Police Anashrit Gulm, Dillibazar, received the award from Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal during a special ceremony organized at the Nepal Police Headquarters, Naxal, on the occasion of the 70th Police Day on Friday.
Born in Ilam, Inspector Rai began his service as a police inspector in 2077 B.S. (2020 A.D.).
While several police posts across the Kathmandu Valley were set on fire and prisoners attempted to flee during the protest, no inmate managed to escape from the Dillibazar Anashrit Gulm under his leadership.
His 70-member police team successfully secured 669 prisoners, ensuring safety and order within the facility.
Rai and his team implemented an effective security restructuring plan and a strategic approach to maintain control over the prisoners, which proved highly successful.
Discipline, Courage, and Dedication Recognized
According to Inspector Rai, some groups tried to incite prisoners during the protest, but his team responded with restraint, intelligence, and courage.
He said their top priority was security—ensuring the safety of inmates, police personnel, and weapons, all of which remained protected during the tense situation.
Inspired by family members in the military, Rai developed a strong attraction toward the security service.
He has received training in criminal investigation, VIP protection, anti–money laundering, financial crime control, and cybercrime.
Having previously served in Siraha, Morang, and the Special Bureau at Nepal Police Headquarters, Rai holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration.
He has already received six departmental awards in the past.
On the same occasion, Home Minister Aryal also presented:
-
the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ to retired Deputy Inspector General Krishna Bahadur Rana,
-
the ‘Motilal Outstanding Investigator Award’ to Deputy Superintendent of Police Dharma Raj Bhandari of the Central Investigation Bureau, and
-
the ‘Purna Shanti Award’ to DSP Bhola Kumar Bhatt of the Ramechhap District Police Office.
