Kathmandu, 9 Sep: The United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed its shock at the killing and injury of Gen-Z. Office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani issued a statement demanding an immediate and transparent investigation into the incident at the Gen-Z demonstration.
The statement called for a swift and transparent investigation. The UN human rights office said security forces used unnecessary and disproportionate force during protests by young people against corruption and the government’s recent social media ban.
“It is the responsibility of the state to respect and ensure the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. Security personnel must adhere to the basic principles regarding the use of force and weapons,” the statement said.
The United Nations has described Nepal as a country with a vibrant democracy and an active civil society, urging it to address the concerns of youth through dialogue.
Similarly, Amnesty International has condemned the government’s efforts to curb freedom of expression, including by banning social media.
In a statement, Amnesty International called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and for the use of force against protesters.
Nineteen protesters have died so far in protests in Nepal that began after social media platforms were banned.
The administration has imposed curfews in many places. The protesters, who identify themselves as Gen-Z, or the new generation, have also raised the issue of anti-corruption.

Protest in front of Parliament House, defying curfew
The new generation of youth (Gen Z) have started protesting since this morning, defying the curfew order. They gathered in front of the Parliament building in Naya Baneshwor and started the protest.
Friends and relatives of 19 young people who were killed yesterday are protesting against the government.
Teams from the Nepal Army, Armed Forces, and Nepal Police have been deployed in front of the Parliament building in Baneshwor. They are seen busy arranging the fence.
Yesterday, some youths entered the Parliament building and vandalized it. Today, the army is stationed inside the Parliament building premises with weapons.
The District Administration Office, Kathmandu, has imposed a curfew from 8:30 am this morning, prohibiting any demonstrations, processions, or gatherings within the Ring Road area for an indefinite period. However, the participants in the demonstration are defying it.
