Solukhumbu, 4 January: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the government is committed to the development of Solukhumbu, which is making a special contribution to tourism. Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Ngimdorji Sherpa Tourism Road organized at Surke, Lhamu Rural Municipality-2, Khumbu Pasang, he said that the development infrastructure here would be further strengthened.
Prime Minister Oli said that cooperation between the provincial and federal governments will continue for the upgrading of the tourism road. “Both governments will be responsible for blacktopping this road. The government will leave no stone unturned in the development campaign of this district,” he said. “Further development work in Khumbu, the birthplace of world-renowned adventurers like national figures Pasang Lhamu Sherpa and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, will greatly help in promoting tourism.”
Reiterating the government’s commitment to make serious efforts to expand and upgrade the road network in the Khumbu region, Prime Minister Oli said that the government will pay special attention to building the necessary infrastructure to further highlight adventure tourism and cultural importance here. “Solukhumbu is a district full of tourism potential. Being the gateway to the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, this region has been attracting adventure tourists. The government is ready to take forward development programs to make the people here economically strong,” he said.
Prime Minister Oli believes that the upgrading of the road and expansion of infrastructure will take the tourism industry here to new heights. The construction of this road is expected to facilitate transportation facilities for the residents of the Khumbu region, as well as contribute to the overall economic and social development of the district, and make a historic contribution to tourism.
In 2024, Solukhumbu, encompassing the Everest region, experienced a significant increase in tourist arrivals, reflecting a robust recovery in Nepal’s tourism sector.

October 2024: The Khumbu region witnessed a substantial influx of tourists, with Lukla Airport recording approximately 200 flights in a single day. On that day, 1,539 tourists arrived, including 667 international visitors.

November 2024: On November 19, the region saw the arrival of 223 foreign tourists, while 362 departed, indicating a dynamic flow of visitors during the peak trekking season.

December 2024: Despite being traditionally considered off-season, the Everest region attracted 228 foreign tourists in a single week, showcasing its year-round appeal.
Annual Overview:
Throughout 2024, Nepal welcomed a total of 1,147,567 foreign visitors, marking a 13.1% increase from the previous year.
