Four dead, 10 missing in Kavre flood-slide

Kavrepalanchok, 12 Ashoj (28 Sep): Due to continuous rain for three days, floods and landslides have caused huge loss of life and property in various places here. Three people died in the flood-slide and 10 people are missing. Three highways in the district are blocked.

Due to incessant rain, six-year-old Yunish Humagai died in a landslide at a house in Banepa Municipality-10 Janagal this morning. Local Sanjiv Bista informed that Yunish was immediately rescued and taken to Bhaktapur Hospital when the doctor declared him dead. According to him, Humagai’s house was destroyed due to a landslide caused by plotting the land above the house. He had to be taken to Bhaktapur for treatment due to the flooding of the highway at Banepa Pulbazar.

Two women died in Temal Rural Municipality-7 Chapakhori when two houses collapsed due to rain this morning. According to local teacher Prem Bahadur Lama, 50-year-old Patali Tamang and her 39-year-old sister are among those who died. His sister had come to Patali’s house from Dhulkhu to help in breaking corn. After the incident, it is said that rescue is being carried out from Narayansthan police station.

Similarly, 45-year-old Prem Bahadur Waiba died on Friday evening after being buried in a landslide in ward no. According to Ward President Rajkumar Waiba, he was buried when he came across a bari mound on his way home after crossing the river. Waiba roped the locals who could not cross the river because the river was big in Chalti.

According to the District Police Office, 10 people have gone missing in the landslide since last night. At 3:30 this morning, a husband and wife went missing when a landslide swept away their house in Panauti Municipality-12 Kalanti. Similarly, two people went missing when a house was washed away by a landslide at Banepa-14 Thalchowk at around 6 o’clock in the morning. At 6 in the morning, two people went missing in a landslide in Namobuddha Napa-2 Shyamapati and four people were missing since morning when a house was destroyed in Panauti-11 Thumki, the police said. Although there were difficulties in the rescue after the incident, it is said that local people’s representatives and security personnel have been mobilized to rescue the incident.

Similarly, when Gopal Timalsina’s house was destroyed in Kolanti, Ward No. 12 of Panauti, three people were rescued alive, while one person is still missing, the office said. It is reported that around 100 people who are at risk of landslide in Panauti-12 Thumki hill are waiting for rescue. Mandandeupur Napa-12, Kafalchaur 5 houses and one house in Bayarbot of Ward No. 3 are at risk and two roadside houses in Narke Bazar on VP Highway in Roshi rural municipality have been swept away by landslides.

The Jirokilo Kuntabesi-Melamchi road section of the Helambu highway has been completely blocked after a landslide occurred at Kodaribhir in Mandandeupur. Mayor Tok Bahadur Waiba informed that efforts are being made to open the highway and move the families at risk to safe places. Due to incessant rain, the flood of Roshi River in Chiuribas, Roshi of Kaverapalanchok has washed away about 100 meters of the road this afternoon. Likewise, the road has been blocked since Friday afternoon at two places on the VP highway in Roshi due to the overflowing of Khare Khola and the road. Similarly, the means of transport has stopped due to the flooding of the bridge at Banepa under the Araniko highway.

On Friday evening, a tree fell on a bus traveling on the road in Panchkhaal Municipality-5, damaging the bus and blocking the road. Similarly, Police Assistant Inspector of Khawa Police Station Umesh Thapalia informed that traffic movement has been stopped since this morning due to landslides and mudslides at different places of Dhulikhel-Khawa road which is under construction under the Araniko highway.

On Friday afternoon, in Mamti located in Ward No. 11 of Rohi Rural Municipality, the Nepalthok-Mangaltar road section of the VP highway was blocked due to the flood of Khare river on Friday afternoon. Security personnel are coordinating with the local authorities and the road department to open the blocked road, but the blocked highway could not be operated due to adverse weather, police said.
