Deputy Speaker Rana Magar has traveled abroad 17 times

Kathmandu, 23 Aug: After becoming the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Indira Rana Magar has traveled abroad 17 times. Although the Deputy Speaker is required to obtain approval from the Speaker before traveling abroad, Rana Magar has followed this procedure only 7 times. It appears that she traveled abroad on 10 occasions without obtaining the Speaker’s approval.

UML Secretary and MP Yogesh Bhattarai also spoke about this in the Thursday meeting of the House of Representatives. Speaking in a special session of the meeting, MP Bhattarai said, ‘after being elected as the Deputy Speaker, she has gone on 17 foreign trips. Of those, only 7 trips were approved by the Speaker as per the law. 10 times, she went without approval. How will the common citizen understand when a person who leads the respected House of Representatives goes like this? What will they answer when asked where she has gone? Is this the good conduct?’

She went to Singapore to participate in the RSIS WTO Parliamentary Workshop on International Trade from May 15 to 17, 2023. She was accompanied by members of the House of Representatives, Ammar Bahadur Rayamajhi and Binod Chaudhary.

Similarly, Deputy Speaker Rana Magar led MPs Maina Karki, Bhagwati Chaudhary, Chanda Karki (Bhandari) and Deputy Secretary Bimalraj Joshi to participate in the Eco Forum Global held in Guiyang, China from July 8 to 9, 2023.

Similarly, she has visited countries including St. Petersburg, Russia from September 8 to 20, 2024, Linzhi, China from July 2 to 7, 2024, and Bangladesh on May 11, 2025.

Similarly, Rana Magar has unofficially visited Spain, America, India, Bangladesh and Hong Kong. Unofficially, she has visited America 4 times, India 3 times and Spain, Bangladesh and Hong Kong once each.

Normally, when the Deputy Speaker goes on a foreign trip, the Speaker must raise procedural comments and approve them. According to the Speaker’s Secretariat, the Deputy Speaker has issued general releases for 10 trips, but they have not been approved.

The ruling parties, the CPN-UML and the Nepali Congress, are collecting signatures from their party MPs to remove Rana Magar from office, raising the issue of her conduct. The party, the Rastriya Swantantra party (RSP), to which she was elected as a member of the House of Representatives, is opposing the move. In this context, a list of foreign visits that raise questions about her conduct in office has been made public.
