Human rights activists said on Thursday that at least 7,005 people have been killed during government crackdowns on nationwide protests that have continued in Iran since last month. Fears remain that the death toll could rise further.
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has held talks with Donald Trump, seeking to increase pressure on Iran. Writing on his social media platform, Trump said, “No final decision has been reached so far. What I said was simply to continue talks and see whether an agreement is possible. Last time, Iran did not agree and had to face the consequences. Hopefully, this time they will act responsibly and pragmatically.”
Speaking to journalists, Trump added, “Iran needs to reach an agreement with the United States soon. I expect that some outcome may emerge within the next month.”
Public anger inside Iran remains intense over the protests and the subsequent crackdown. As families of the deceased begin observing the traditional 40-day mourning period, anger is expected to intensify further.
Rising Death Toll
The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has released figures stating that 7,005 people have been killed, including 214 members of the security forces. The Iranian government had earlier announced on January 21 that 3,117 people had died. Historically, Iran’s religious establishment has been accused of underreporting or failing to report deaths during periods of unrest.
Talks and Diplomacy
Senior Iranian security official Ali Larijani met Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Qatar. He also held meetings in Oman with Tehran-backed Houthi rebels and the Palestinian Hamas group. Meanwhile, the United States has increased pressure on Iran by deploying aircraft carriers, warships, and military aircraft to the Middle East.
