Christians Celebrate Easter Sunday with Joy, Faith, and Hope

Padam Gurung:

Kathmandu, 20 April: Christians across the globe celebrated Easter Sunday today, marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead — a cornerstone of Christian faith and a symbol of hope, renewal, and victory over sin and death.

Churches were filled with joyful worshippers attending early morning services, many dressed in white, a color symbolizing purity and new life. The sound of hymns, prayers, and church bells echoed across cities and towns as communities gathered to commemorate the resurrection, which Christians believe occurred on the third day after Jesus’ crucifixion.

In many countries, including Nepal, Easter was celebrated with a blend of solemn devotion and joyful festivity. Special prayers were held in churches, with messages of peace, forgiveness, and love shared among congregants. Pastors and church leaders spoke about the significance of the resurrection and its power to transform lives.

“Easter reminds us that no matter how dark the situation may seem, there is always hope. Jesus’ resurrection gives us the strength to rise again, even after the greatest trials,” said Pastor Samuel Thapa during his Easter message in Kathmandu.

Many families also took part in traditional activities such as Easter feasts, egg painting, and gift exchanges. For children, Easter egg hunts brought fun and laughter, while adults reflected on the deeper spiritual meaning of the day.

The festival also served as a reminder of unity and compassion. Charitable organizations distributed food, clothing, and essentials to the poor, while several communities came together to organize blood donation programs and support drives for the needy.

In a world often burdened with conflict, injustice, and hardship, Easter Sunday offers a universal message of renewal — a call to embrace kindness, reconciliation, and hope.

As the sun set on this sacred day, candles were lit and prayers whispered in homes and churches alike — a symbol of the light that Easter brings to millions around the world.

What is Easter Sunday?

Easter Sunday is the most important and joyful day in the Christian calendar. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Chris, twho Christians believe rose from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. This event is seen as proof of Jesus’ divine nature and the foundation of Christian faith — showing that life triumphs over death, and hope over despair.

According to the Bible, Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and was buried in a tomb. On Sunday morning, some of his followers discovered the tomb was empty. Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead, just as he had foretold.

Easter is not just a religious event; it also represents new life, renewal, and victory over sin and suffering. That’s why it is often associated with springtime symbols like eggs, flowers, and light.

Easter Sunday usually comes after Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and reflection, and follows Holy Week, which includes Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday.
