Bangladesh has charged former Prime Minister Hasina, who fled to India, with crimes against humanity

A government prosecutor formally filed charges on Sunday against Hasina and two senior officials, accusing them of violent suppression during last year’s student-led protests, Bloomberg reported.”

Government prosecutors have claimed that an investigation report found Sheikh Hasina directly ordered security forces, her political party (Awami League), and affiliated groups to carry out violent crackdowns resulting in a large number of casualties.

‘These killings were planned,’ chief prosecutor Tajul Islam said during a televised hearing, according to Bloomberg.”

Government prosecutors also argued that, as the head of government at the time, Hasina bears ‘command responsibility’—meaning legal accountability for the crimes committed by her subordinates—for the actions of security forces. In this case, Islam revealed that 81 individuals have been listed as witnesses.

Last year, after weeks of student-led street protests against her, Hasina fled to New Delhi, India, in the first week of August.

Hasina, who had ruled Bangladesh unchallenged for 15 years, was replaced by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who now heads an interim government.

A few weeks ago, the Bangladeshi government banned Hasina’s party, the Awami League, under anti-terrorism laws.”

“The Yunus-led interim government has been urging India to extradite Hasina back to Bangladesh for the crimes and corruption committed during her autocratic rule. However, India has refused to repatriate her and continues to provide her sanctuary.

Bangladesh’s Awami League (Hasina’s party) has historically enjoyed close ties with India, dating back to before Bangladesh’s independence. In return for India’s support, Hasina had cracked down on radical Muslim groups in Bangladesh to please Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India consistently turned a blind eye to her actions, supporting her unconditionally. Even when Western nations including the U.S. condemned her for democratic backsliding, human rights violations, and brutal suppression of opposition, India shielded her from international pressure.”

Key points:

  1. Highlights the extradition request and India’s refusal

  2. Explains the historical India-Awami League relationship

  3. Details the quid-pro-quo arrangement (cracking down on radicals for Indian support)

  4. Shows India’s consistent protection despite international criticism

Alternative phrasing options:

  • “India has been providing safe haven to Hasina despite the interim government’s repeated requests for her extradition over allegations of autocratic crimes and corruption.”

  • “This protection continued even as Western powers denounced her authoritarian practices and violent crackdowns on political opponents.”
