USA and Iran Hold Talks in Oman

The United States, which has been repeatedly issuing threats of military action, is set to hold talks with Iran on Friday, marking a significant development in the long-standing tensions between the two countries. Iran has agreed to enter negotiations after facing sustained pressure from the United States through diplomatic, political, and strategic means to resume talks aimed at reaching an agreement related to its nuclear program.

According to the American television network CNN, the two sides have agreed to conduct the talks in Muscat, the capital of Oman. Regional officials have stated that Iran chose Muscat deliberately, viewing the location as a continuation of previous nuclear-focused negotiations that were also held in Oman. Oman has historically played the role of a neutral mediator between Iran and Western countries, particularly the United States, making it a familiar and relatively acceptable venue for both sides.

The talks are expected to include high-level representatives from both countries. From the United States, Special Envoy of President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff, along with Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, are scheduled to participate. Representing Iran, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will lead the Iranian delegation, accompanied by other senior officials. Despite confirmation of the meeting, the exact agenda of the talks has not yet been officially disclosed.

There are clear disagreements between the two sides regarding the scope of the negotiations. The United States insists that the talks should not be limited solely to Iran’s nuclear program. Washington wants to include Iran’s ballistic missile program, its support for armed groups in the Middle East, and the country’s internal human rights situation as part of the discussion. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has explicitly stated that negotiations must address these broader security and regional concerns.

Iran, however, has firmly rejected the inclusion of any issues beyond its nuclear activities. Iranian officials maintain that only the nuclear program is open for discussion and that other matters fall outside the scope of the talks. Tehran continues to assert that its nuclear activities are conducted solely for peaceful purposes, including energy production and scientific research.

Nevertheless, the United States and Israel have long accused Iran of attempting to develop nuclear weapons, allegations that Iran consistently denies. In recent weeks, the United States has significantly increased its military presence in the Middle East, deploying thousands of troops, aircraft carriers, and fighter jets, a move widely interpreted as a show of pressure ahead of the negotiations.

These talks are being closely watched by the international community, as their outcome could have major implications for regional stability, global security, and the future of US-Iran relations.
