Happiness over Magar and Gurung languages being recognized as official languages

Tanahun, 26 Jul: Celebrations were held in Tanahun after the Gandaki Province government officially recognized Magar and Gurung languages for government use.

A lamp-lighting ceremony was organized in Damauli to welcome and celebrate the provincial government’s decision. The event was coordinated by Tamu Student Chhoj Dhin Tanahun and the Nepal Magar Association Tanahun.

Jeevan Gurung, Chairperson of Ward No. 6 of Byas Municipality, said that the establishment of the provincial government through federalism has supported the preservation of local languages and cultures.

The Nepal Magar Association Tanahun issued a press release on Saturday, expressing gratitude to the Gandaki Province government.

In a joint statement issued by the association’s chairperson Khadga Singh Thapa Magar and secretary Kehar

Singh Ale Magar, they expressed happiness over the provision in the Constitution of Nepal (2072 BS) that allows provincial governments to use additional national languages in government functions, alongside Nepali, in recognition of the country’s multiethnic, multilingual, and multicultural federal democratic republican structure.

The statement recalled that the Language Commission had recommended recognizing Magar and Gurung as working languages in Gandaki Province. It also noted that the 22nd meeting of the 8th session of the Gandaki Provincial Assembly, held on Asar 24, 2082 BS, unanimously passed the bill to use Magar and Gurung as official languages for provincial government work.

Appreciation was extended to the Chief Minister, Minister for Social Development, Finance Minister, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Gandaki Province Assembly, and leaders of major political parties for their direct and indirect contributions to this historic and inclusive decision that strengthens the foundation of federalism.

Thanks were also extended to all party leaders, whips, provincial assembly members, the Language Commission, the National Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities, subject experts, IPGs Forum, IPAS, and the Gandaki Province and Kaski District Committees of the Nepal Magar Association, along with all campaigners and supporters involved in this effort.
